Leading health and well-being company Humana Inc. partnered with the Timucuan Parks Foundation at Fort Caroline National Memorial in Jacksonville to launch its new wellness initiative that rewards people for spending time in nature.

Jacksonville’s Timucuan Trail State and National Parks are the first municipal parks in the country to incorporate Humana-patented beacons which reward Go365 members for spending time in nature and getting active at one of the 22 participating Timucuan parks and preserves. Go365 is Humana’s wellness and rewards program available to employers and groups across the country.

“With our beautiful and vast park system here, and with Jacksonville being a Humana Bold Goal market, where we are aiming to improve community health 20 percent by 2020, it’s the perfect location to launch this wellness initiative,” said Humana Medical Director and long-time Jacksonville resident Dr. John Montgomery. “In addition, we know from the preliminary results of our Park Rx pilot in South Florida, where patients were prescribed park activity, that those who had never visited the parks reported feeling physically unhealthy an average of 4.2 more days per month than those who reported going to the park one to five times per month.”

Using Bluetooth and location-based mobile technology, Go365 offers members a way to earn rewards at the parks by checking in with their mobile device using the Go365 App (available for iPhones and Androids) “beacon check in” feature. Rewards can be redeemed at the Go365 Mall to purchase e-gift cards, fitness devices, apparel, charitable donations and product discounts.

“Partnering with Humana to promote healthy living fits well with our community health initiative to showcase the physical and mental health benefits and therapeutic potential of the national, state and city preservation parks in the greater Jacksonville area,” said Mark Middlebrook, executive director of Timucuan Parks Foundation. “We have the largest city park system in the nation, and we want to invite everyone to come out to our national, state and city preservation parks to enjoy the trails and natural surroundings while working to improve or maintain a healthy lifestyle.”
