FDNY History: Calendar Features First Woman

A New York City firefighter has made history by becoming the first woman to be featured in the Fire Department of New York’s annual Calendar of Heroes.

Danae Mines, 36, an 11-year veteran of the FDNY, faced an uphill battle in becoming a firefighter, let alone Miss March 2015. There are only 41 women in the FDNY today; less than 4 percent of the Bravest are Black or Latino; and even those closest to her urged her down a different career path. “I had absolutely no support from my family when I wanted to come on the job,” she told the New York Daily News.
