The DiversityInc Top 50 Companies for Diversity survey is an editorial process, with rankings determined solely by empirical data submitted by participating companies to the application, which requires more than 150 fields of data.
Companies that do business with DiversityInc, including our Benchmarking service, do not receive any preferential treatment.

Q: What is The DiversityInc Top 50 Companies for Diversity?
A: The DiversityInc Top 50 Companies for Diversity is the leading assessment of diversity management in corporate America and globally. Participation in the survey has increased dramatically, more than 1,800 companies in 2017.
The DiversityInc Top 50 Companies for Diversity survey shows increased participation for its detailed, empirically driven ranking. The free report card assesses performance based on four key areas of diversity management:
- Talent Pipeline: workforce breakdown, recruitment, diameter of existing talent, structures
- Talent Development: resource groups, mentoring, philanthropy, movement, fairness
- Leadership Accountability: responsible for results, personal communications, visibility
- Supplier Diversity: spend with companies owned by people from underrepresented groups; accountability, support
Q: How is it different from other diversity lists?
A: The DiversityInc Top 50 list is derived exclusively from corporate survey submissions. To be considered for a spot in the DiversityInc Top 50, a company must score above average in all four areas. Companies are evaluated within the context of their own industries.
The data is purely empirical and objective. Companies that advertise with DiversityInc or have other business relationships receive NO preferential treatment. Read why the Top 50 isn't pay to play.
Q: Do you have to pay to participate?
A: There is no fee to participate. Every company that completes the survey will receive a free report card assessing overall performance versus all participants and performance in the four key areas measured. Companies that want more in-depth comparisons should contact Top50@DiversityInc.com.
Q. When is the submission deadline?
A. All entries must be submitted on March 2, 2018, by 11:59 PM in your time zone.
Q: When will the results be announced?
A: Results for the 2018 survey will be announced at our event in New York City on May 1, 2018.
Q: What are the criteria to apply for the DiversityInc Top 50?
A: A company must have at least 1,000 U.S. employees to participate.
Q: Who within my organization should complete the survey?
A: Anyone you designate internally may complete the survey, but we recommend one person, usually someone familiar with diversity management, be the primary person filling it out. You will be required to enter a code unique to your company; the link provided will take you directly to the survey and you will be prompted to enter the code there. The link is secure and can only be accessed by you and others at your company with whom you share it. Please be sure to only share the link with those responsible for helping you fill it out.
A: We do not divulge specific demographic data of any company, and we guarantee its confidentiality. If a company makes the DiversityInc Top 50 list or one of our specialty lists, we only discuss the best practices it utilizes that helped it make the list. There is no negativity associated with participation. If a company does not make the list or one of our other lists, its name is never revealed.
Q: Can we include employees outside of the United States?
A: No. The DiversityInc Top 50 survey only covers your programs and employee representation in the United States (including Alaska and Hawaii but NOT the commonwealth of Puerto Rico). DiversityInc has a few general global questions on this survey and a separate survey for other countries.
Q: How is the survey administered/distributed?
A: If you meet the above criteria and have provided your information to us, you will receive a link to our survey.
Q: Do I need any special software to access the survey?
A: No. Our survey software is web-based, and we cannot enter data for you. The survey is filled out online, but a Word document is available for internal data-gathering purposes only. To make the process easier, you can download an Excel template for all talent pipeline/human capital questions and upload it instead of entering the responses for those questions using the web tool.
Q: Can we count a program or procedure implemented during the year that was not in effect for the entire year?
A: As long as the program or procedure was in effect for three months of the calendar year surveyed, you may count it.
Q: What do you mean in your survey when you say "formal mentoring programs"?
A: Formal programs are organized and sanctioned by the company. The company arranges for the mentor/mentee relationship.
Q: How do you vet/confirm the information from companies that apply for your top company award?
A: We look for statistical anomalies, outliers and illogical answers. We also spot-check survey questions randomly. We ask companies whose data appear to be an outlier and/or that we don't know to have their CEOs sign off on the validity of the submission. When we find something wrong, nearly 100 percent of the time, we find that companies are too conservative and under report their results, especially when it comes to best practices such as mentoring and resource groups.
Q: Can we request copies of our prior submissions or report cards from previous years?
A: DiversityInc does not retain Top 50 competition application materials and submissions (including PDF versions of survey responses and uploaded supplemental documents). Additionally, company report cards are discarded once the following year's Top 50 survey is open and are no longer available.

Data Submission Security Process
An alphanumeric code is assigned to each company and cannot be used by any other organization. All IP addresses for every session utilizing your company's unique code are tracked. Our data-management practices are ISO/IEC 27002 compliant.
The web-based survey tool, the statistical-analysis system and all data submissions are on three separate dedicated servers at a leading IT company that deploys a multilayered physical security approach and complies with the U.S.–EU Safe Harbor Framework and the U.S.–Swiss Safe Harbor Framework.
Data are retained for year-to-year aggregate trending information.
Access to Data at DiversityInc
Administrative access is limited to two DiversityInc employees and credentials are changed every 30 days.
Because of the volume of participants (we estimate more than 1,000 this year), we will not sign individual agreements. This published statement applies to all companies submitting data.
DiversityInc, Subpoenas and Lawsuits
The DiversityInc Top 50 survey is a purely editorial process and, therefore, is subject to state laws on source confidentiality. Since DiversityInc is headquartered in New Jersey, which has one of the strongest shield laws in the country to protect source privacy, we have never agreed to even cooperate with a lawsuit in 15 years of running the survey. If subpoenaed, we will not testify, even if asked whether a company has submitted data.
How DiversityInc Top 50 Data Are Analyzed
We use SAS software and have developed algorithms to statistically evaluate the data we collect. The evaluation is metrics driven. We measure respondents' answers based on their assessment against other organizations with similar workforces. For more on the methodology of the ranking, click here.
Credibility of Submission
We require the CEO, the CHRO or another corporate officer to sign every submission (notarized). This applies to all companies.
Why are you asking companies to submit EEO-1 information this year?
We are giving extra credit to companies that either send us a link to a public disclosure of their EEO-1 numbers or send us the information separately. We will not publish their EEO-1 data. The EEO-1 data will be compared with the DiversityInc submission.
Do you share any of our data with the public when the list is announced or do you write about it?
We only publish information about companies that make the DiversityInc Top 50 list or one of our Specialty Lists. Any information that is shared is positive and does not disclose human-capital data.
