The DiversityInc Top 50 ranking is the leading assessment of diversity management in corporate America. Participation in the assessment has increased dramatically, with more than 1,800 companies in 2022.

Participants receive a free report card which assesses performance based on six key areas of diversity and inclusion management:

  • Human Capital Metrics: gender and racial/ethnicity breakdown of representation in overall workforce representation, overall management, senior management, new hires, promotions, and 10% highest paid populations.
  • Leadership Accountability: CEO/senior leadership commitment and accountability, board of directors, office of diversity and inclusion, diversity council practices, and representation metrics.
  • Talent Programs: employee resource groups, mentoring, high potential and sponsorship programs, practices, and participation metrics.
  • Workplace Practices: talent acquisition, talent management, onboarding, diversity training, workforce development and engagement, LGBTQ, people with disabilities, military community, and employee benefits policies and practices.
  • Supplier Diversity: spend with companies owned by people from underrepresented groups, accountability, and practices.
  • Philanthropy: contributions to non-profit organizations focused on people from underrepresented groups, employee volunteerism, and matching programs and practices.

The DiversityInc Top 50 list is derived exclusively from corporate assessment submissions. To be considered for a spot in the DiversityInc Top 50, a company must score above average in all six areas. Companies are evaluated within the context of their own industries.

The data is purely empirical and objective. Companies that do business with DiversityInc or have other business relationships receive NO preferential treatment. 

No. There is no fee to participate. The assessment submission process is free. Every company that completes the assessment will receive a free report card assessing overall performance versus all participants and performance in the six key areas measured. Companies that want more in-depth benchmark comparisons should contact Top50@DiversityInc.com.

All entries must be submitted on Friday, March 10, 2023, by 11:59 p.m. in your time zone.

Results for the 2023 survey will be announced May 2, 2023, in person in New York City or virtually.

  • Have at least 750 U.S. employees
  • Submit a notarized form signed by either the CEO, the chief human resources officer (CHRO), or a corporate officer (other than the chief diversity officer or person responsible for diversity & inclusion) affirming that all data submitted is accurate. All data considered for DiversityInc Top 50 rankings are U.S.-based.
  • Complete NOD’s Disability Employment Tracker
  • At least one employee from each company named to the DiversityInc Top 50 must attend the Top 50 dinner in order to complete the application process and maintain a spot on the list.
  • Have at least 750 U.S. employees
  • Submit a notarized form signed by either the CEO, the chief human resources officer (CHRO), or a corporate officer (other than the chief diversity officer or person responsible for diversity & inclusion) affirming that all data submitted is accurate. Anyone you designate internally may complete the assessment, but we recommend one person, usually someone familiar with diversity and inclusion management, be the primary person filling it out.

You will be required to enter a code unique to your company. The link provided will take you directly to the assessment and you will be prompted to enter the code there.

The link is secure and can only be accessed by you and others at your company with whom you share it. Please be sure to only share the link with those responsible for helping you fill it out.

We do not divulge specific demographic data of any company, and we guarantee its confidentiality. If a company makes the DiversityInc Top 50 list or one of our Specialty Lists, we only discuss the shared best practices it utilizes that helped it make the list.

We never release a company’s human capital metrics, supplier diversity or philanthropy spend data. There is no negativity associated with participation. If a company does not make the list or one of our other lists, its name is never revealed.

No. You may only enter data about your programs and employee representation in the United States (including U.S. territories).

If you meet the above criteria and have provided your information to us, you will receive a link to participate in the Top 50 assessment.  Additional instructions and information will be shared in that email.

No. We use Momentive AI. Our assessment software is web-based, and we cannot enter data for you. The assessment is filled out online, and a Word document is available for internal data-gathering purposes only.

There are some questions where we have required a response to prevent calculating null values into the ranking algorithm. The system will notify you of the questions that require a response. In these cases, we have either provided you an option to select no response or enter zero.

No. There is no character limit for those questions in which you have the opportunity to explain further.

Yes. There is a list of terms used in the assessment and the associated definition and/or scope as it relates to the Top 50 assessment.

The Top 50 assessment only captures information for formal programs that are organized, sanctioned and tracked by the company. This includes formal programs related to mentorship, sponsorship, Employee Resource Groups (ERGs), employee volunteerism, and giving. Please do not submit any information for programs and/or initiatives that are not formally tracked or recorded by your company.

We look for statistical anomalies, outliers and illogical answers. We also spot-check assessment questions randomly. We may notify companies if there are anomalies in their submission prior to the assessment closing.

We also require companies to have their CEO or another company officer (does not include the head of/Chief Diversity Officer) sign a letter confirming that, to the best of their knowledge, the data submitted is correct. The letter must be notarized.

There are several events and milestones companies tell us happen internally:

  1. Kick-off emails or meetings to let departments know what is needed. Remember to include your legal department. (November).
  2. Data requests – sent to HR, supplier diversity, philanthropy, etc. (December – early January if using calendar year data).
  3. Data collection completion (typically by end of January).
  4. Draft assessment completion (first two weeks of February).
  5. Legal review – provide legal with enough time to review the responses before the submission deadline on March 10, 2023.
  6. CEO, CHRO or other corporate officer sign-off one to two weeks before the deadline.

Once the assessment submission process closes, DiversityInc will only provide one PDF of the complete submission.  Additionally, company report cards are no longer distributed once the following year’s Top 50 assessment process is open.

Yes, a company can do whatever they like with their report card. 

Yes, you can have multiple people answering different parts of the survey at one time. Through the collaboration function, you can invite other people within your company to complete portions of the survey. 
The survey is set up so there are different pages and as you work through the survey or save a particular page, then those responses are recorded. The only time that there could be a problem is if two individuals 
were on the page at the same time. Then whoever entered or whoever pressed save last would have their information be the be what was recorded.

Yes. It can be found within the assessment portal. Simply login and look for the pages button in the top right corner. All templates will be listed there. 

You can give a collaborator editorial access to one or more tasks, but it is not possible to give them editorial access to just some questions within the task—it is all or none.  

These are now entered into the survey directly to help avoid submission errors. They are no longer part of the template. 

You will have to reach out to DiversityInc and request access to those documents if you do not have them. We will assist you to the extent that we can in keeping in line with our privacy policy

Yes, the platform allows you to set the level of access so that some users have editor access and others view only. 

The previous calendar year. For example, the 2023 assessment is for January 1, 2022 – December 31, 2022. 

The exact calculations change each year, but the first section (human capital) is weighted the most and the last section weighted the least. The sections decrease in weight as it continues.
