Detroit Youth Choir Rocks ‘America’s Got Talent’ Bringing Terry Crews to Tears, Earn the Golden Buzzer

The Detroit Youth Choir brought the house down on American’s Got Talent (AGT) on Tuesday. The choir performed Macklemore’s hit song, “Can’t Hold Us.” Detroit Youth Choir director, Anthony White, arranged the song with a twist. The intro started as a rousing hymn and then the choir, made up of Detroit children ranging in ages from 8 to 18, broke into a high-energy performance with rapping, singing, and dancing.

The community-based choir began as a way to provide a safe space for Detroit children to express themselves through music and dance. White proudly revealed to Judge Simon Cowell that all of the children maintained good grades and were incredibly talented. Cowell implied that the Detroit Youth Choir could be the first choir to win the one million dollar prize on America’s Got Talent.

Host Terry Crews, who is from Flint, Mich., was instantly inspired by the Detroit Youth Choir and White. He said that he saw himself in the children who were performing.

After the electrifying performance, which received a standing ovation, the judges sang the choir’s praises. Right before voting took place, Terry Crews came out to the judges’ platform beaming with admiration and pride, stating: “Every man and woman on this stage represents me and where I came from. I remember sitting at my window in Flint, Michigan, dreaming about wanting to make it and wanting to be here — and they are here.”

Crews became emotional as he mentioned that people like White helped him become successful.

“Let me tell you something, Mr. White. All it takes is one person to believe in a young man or woman for them to reach their dreams, and you are that man, sir,” Crews exclaimed as he hit the golden buzzer. The golden buzzer sends contestants on America’s Got Talent straight to the live rounds.
