Cox Communications on Honoring Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Cox Communications ranked No. 34 on The Fair360, formerly DiversityInc Top 50 Companies for Diversity list in 2022.

Cox Communications shared ways organizations and individuals can honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day and how to observe the day year-round. Dr. King was a Baptist minister and activist that led the United States civil rights movement from the 1950s until his assassination in 1968.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day was established to honor the life and legacy of the civil rights leader. The federal holiday celebrates Dr. King’s birthday and is celebrated on the third Monday in January, recognized as a National Day of Service.

“The purpose of the MLK Day of Service is to strengthen our society, create solutions to social problems and move us closer to Dr. King’s vision of a ‘beloved community,'” said Cox Communications. “It’s important to remember that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day isn’t simply a day off, but a ‘day on’ to volunteer and give back to the communities and causes that matter to each of us.”

The company shared tips and ideas for volunteer opportunities to engage in, especially opportunities that focus on racial justice, equality and civil rights:

  • Donating and delivering meals to local homeless shelters, as well as clothing items to help combat the cold weather
  • Get involved with a local historical society
  • Join the Smithsonian Digital Volunteer program to help transcribe historical documents, which range from Black history to personal letters written by historical figures

Cox Communications also encouraged honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day year-round by volunteering in local communities, supporting Black-owned businesses and mentoring young children.
