Companies Hiring Amid COVID-19 Crisis

Filings for unemployment insurance have risen to an unprecedented 2.3 million due to the COVID-19 crisis. Less than two weeks ago, that number was at 281,000 — which was already alarmingly close to the 299,000 previous record in 2017. Though unemployment rates have surged more than eight times the country’s previous record, many companies that allow for remote or essential work are still hiring.

Walmart, (No. 34 on Fair360, formerly DiversityInc’s 2019 Top 50 Companies for Diversity) is looking to hire 150,000 temporary hourly workers in its U.S. stores, clubs, distribution centers and fulfillment centers. It is also reducing its application time from two weeks to 24 hours to fill the spots more quickly. Walmart also announced it would be granting cash bonuses to employees. Full-time hourly workers will receive $300 and part-time hourly workers will receive $150. Associates will receive their quarterly bonuses ahead of schedule. The bonuses will amount to $550 million.

CVS Health (No. 27 on 2019 Top 50) also announced it was hiring for 50,000 positions and providing bonuses to its employees. Bonuses — ranging from $150 to $500 — will be granted to CVS’s pharmacists, healthcare professionals, store associates, managers, and other site-based hourly employees. CVS also said it would be hiring new full-time, part-time and hourly workers immediately. Positions include store workers, home delivery drivers, distribution center employees and member and customer service professionals.

Other companies hiring include Dollar General, filling 50,000 new roles; Domino’s; Kroger, looking to fill 7,000 positions across brands and also offering bonuses to employees; and PepsiCo, hiring 7,000 positions across brands and granting bonuses to employees.
