KPMG: Celebrating International Women’s Day 2020

Michele Meyer-Shipp says gender equality is not just a women’s issue, but is essential to sustaining a fair and functioning society, and for economies and communities to thrive.

March 8 is International Women’s Day, a global day that celebrates the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women, while continuing to push for gender equality.

The theme for International Women’s Day this year is Each for Equal, a reminder that gender equality is not just a women’s issue—in fact, it’s essential to sustaining a fair and functioning society, and for economies and communities to thrive. A gender equal world is healthier, wealthier and more harmonious.

While some progress has been made, it’s not nearly at the pace and scale needed to drive sustainable change. According to the World Economic Forum’s Gender Gap Report 2020, we won’t achieve overall global gender parity for another 100 years.

Around the world, a Global Inclusion and Diversity Strategic Framework drives the inclusion and diversity efforts of KPMG International member firms—helping to build an inclusive future for our people and those in the communities in which we live and work. Here in the U.S., we continue to challenge and hold ourselves accountable for building an inclusive and diverse workplace through our KPMG’s Network of Women (KNOW) Business Resource Group (BRG), and programs like Stacy Lewis Rising Stars, Accelerating Your Career Potential, KPMG’s Women’s Leadership Summit and Future Leaders program. These represent only a few of the many initiatives we’ve invested in to support, develop and advance our women, underrepresented talent and all our people.

With 2020 marking the start of a fresh new decade, all of us—organizations and individuals alike—have an opportunity to refocus on what we can do to empower lasting, positive change. Each of us can make a difference, so in celebration of International Women’s Day, I encourage you to learn more about inclusion and diversity wherever you live or work and get involved, because the future for all of us is equal, together and inclusive.
