Daniel knew he’d do whatever it took to make his dreams come true. Born and raised in Richmond, Virginia, Daniel grew up facing a lot of obstacles, including the loss of his mother at a young age and losing his family home. Yet, he persevered. He was determined to succeed. After losing his mother, he was in a dark place; once a promising student at a top-tier school, he felt lost. He spent the next few years in pursuit of a better life. By his senior year, Daniel was at a new school but had to walk 15 miles from school to home.
Daniel found the support he needed at the Boys and Girls Club of Metro Richmond. Through that involvement, he discovered and enrolled in the Catapult Program, a Capital One workforce development program for 18 to 24 year-olds that’s aimed at recruiting and retaining diverse and qualified associates. During the 6-week paid internship, Daniel thrived with the support of his mentor Jon Bennett. Daniel says, “Jon didn’t just make me more professional or financially literate, he made me a better person all around.” Following the internship, Daniel was determined to work full-time at Capital One. He, unfortunately, wasn’t offered a job.
Tenacity and perseverance led Daniel to enroll in community college and work nights while he completed the Catapult Program for a second time. He even planned his bus schedules to arrive at the office before his trainer. His hard work paid off: Capital One offered Daniel full-time employment as a Fraud & Disputes Representative. This was so much more than a job to Daniel. He felt valued at Capital One and knew his life had value. Daniel is proud that he’s able to take care of his family, buy his first home and be a leader in his community to help others’ dreams come true.
