Border Patrol Forces Migrant To Hold Sign Saying “I Like Men”

Border patrol agents forced a Honduran migrant at a processing center in Texas was forced to hold a sign that said “I like men” in Spanish in order to humiliate him.

According to emails obtained by CNN and written by a Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) agent who witnessed the incident, the man was forced to walk throughout the entire center while holding the sign that said “Me gustan los hombres.”

The emails show that they were sent to the agent’s supervisor and outlined the March 5 episode. The emails also showed that the CBP agent allegedly witnessed several colleagues displaying poor behavior and management’s failure to act.

The CBP agent that reported the incident wrote that he approached the other agent responsible for writing it and another one who was laughing. The reporting agent told them their behavior was unprofessional and neither agent responded.

The agent that tried to defend the Honduran man took the note from him and gave him another one without the derogatory phrase on it, though what it said or what its purpose was is unclear.

Several employees saw this incident, according to the emails, including two senior Border Patrol agents and five other agents. Even though the agent who defended the migrant took the note to the senior person on duty that night, no action was ever taken.

This is just another story in a long line in recent weeks exposing the dark and dirty underbelly of the way that federal employees treat migrants.

A report by ProPublica released this week revealed a Facebook group for current and former Border Patrol agents that featured racist jokes about migrant deaths and derogatory, sexist comments about Latina lawmakers.

On Wednesday, Acting Homeland Security Secretary Kevin McAleenan announced on Twitter that he was ordering an immediate investigation into the offensive, racist posts from active Border Patrol agents.
