While the Department of Homeland Security is separating children from their parents at the U.S.-Mexico border, they have no problem enjoying Mexican food.
In an appallingly thoughtless move, DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen chose to dine at a Mexican restaurant in Washington, D.C., amid the border issues currently taking the nation by storm.
A group called the Metro DC Democratic Socialists of America approached Nielsen in the restaurant.
“If kids don’t eat in peace, you don’t eat in peace!” protesters chanted. They also shouted, “Shame!”
“Have you listened to it Have you heard the babies crying Do you hear them crying” activists asked, regarding a tape leaked earlier in the week of young children taken at the border crying.
“No borders, no walls, sanctuary for all,” they said.
What’s perhaps worse is that a spokesman for DHS, Tyler Q. Houlton, said the occasion was “a work dinner.” He wrote in a series of tweets:
While having a work dinner tonight, the Secretary and her staff heard from a small group of protestors who share her concern with our current immigration laws that have created a crisis on our southern border.

.@SecNielsen encourages all – including this group – who want to see an immigration system that works, contributes to our economy, protects our security, & reflects our values reach out to Members & seek their support to close immigration loopholes that made our system a mess.

The Secretary has been working with Members of Congress for months in search of a solution and she will continue to do so this week.

While enjoying Mexican food and keeping Mexican families apart, has Nielsen been in search of a solution
Her words speak for themselves. She has defended the policy and insisted that children who arrive are well taken care of.
“Illegal actions have and must have consequences, no more free passes, no more get out of jail free cards,” she said previously. In communities every day, if you commit a crime police will take you to jail regardless of whether you have a family.”
“We do not have the luxury of pretending that all individuals coming to this country as a family unit are in fact a family,” said Nielsen.
Nielsen, like Trump, also falsely stated that the policy was already in place and that the administration was simply enforcing it.
