Black Tech Company, RIGHTTHERE Corporation, Develops RTC Protech App to Combat Police Brutality

A Black tech company against police brutality, RIGHTTHERE Corporation (RTC), has created an app to help users record and report situations of police brutality. The app, RTC Protech, was launched in 2018 and soon will be available for Apple and Android.

Maria Watkins, a Birmingham, Ala., native, founded RTC and began developing the RTC Protech app in 2017. RTC Protech includes features that not only aid during an incident of police misconduct, but also can point the victim to the appropriate avenues to seek justice after the event.

RTC Protech includes GPS tracking and voice and touch activation, which the user can employ to alert emergency contacts. It also includes audio and video recording to record evidence, also activated by voice and touch. It provides access to a legal referral network and helps individuals file complaints of police misconduct to appropriate agencies.

The app will be subscription-based. RIGHTTHERE’s website says it supports both law enforcement officers and innocent civilians, but that its mission is to hold police officers accountable for instances of misconduct.

Law enforcement violence against people of color remains a prominent issue in the United States. Police brutality is the sixth leading cause of death among young — mostly Black, Native American and Latino — men, according to a study by Rutgers University-Newark.

Black people are three times more likely to be killed by police than white people, according to mappingpoliceviolence.org. Between 2013 and 2018, 21% of Black victims were unarmed, compared with 14% of white victims.

With cases like those of Eric Garner failing to end in true justice for the offending officer, the Black Lives Matter movement has made police brutality one of its main causes.

RIGHTTHERE Corporation’s plan for addressing police brutality includes prevention, intervention and defense. Through evidence gathering and legal support, RTC Protech can help in all three areas.
