BASF’s Lars Kissau on Working Toward Net Zero

Dr. Lars Kissau is the President Net Zero Accelerator at BASF. BASF ranked No. 12 on The Fair360, formerly DiversityInc Top 50 Companies for Diversity list in 2022.

BASF is working toward net zero emissions by 2050. Dr. Lars Kissau, President Net Zero Accelerator at BASF, shared the work that the company is doing — and what needs to come next — to reach this goal.

“Ninety-five percent of hydrogen in Europe is currently produced in processes with high CO2 emissons,” Kissau said. “And it is already a Herculean task if we only produce the chemically used hydrogen without emissions. The energy requirements are gigantic.”

To hit its goal, the company said it needs:

  1. Much more renewable energy for the widespread use of emission-free hydrogen
  2. Technology to combine the benefits of all innovative production processes
  3. A functioning hydrogen market to enable a price reduction for market participants

BASF is also aiming for a 25% reduction in its CO2 footprint as early as 2030.
