AOC Defends Her Latina Heritage, Calls Republicans’ Obsession with Her ‘Weird’

Racism is never far from political strategy and right-wing pundits’ fear tactics.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) advocates for resolutions and laws that support working-class Americans and people of color; meanwhile, members of the GOP and their supporters continue to focus on where she’s from, the way she looks, her hair, how she dances and speaks.

On “Late Night with Seth Meyers” on Thursday, while Ocasio-Cortez highlighted the ideals of the Green New Deal, including “healthcare is a right and not a privilege,” she also called out the GOP for their obsession with her:

“I mean, it’s weird. Like, why are so many grown men just obsessed with this 29-year-old?” she said as the crowd laughed.

In the latest round of attacks this week, Fox News host Laura Ingraham and guest debated a Latina takeover, and asked if AOC does the “Obama thing,” taking on accents:

Ocasio-Cortez fired back on Twitter that “if by ‘the Latina thing,’ she means I actually do the work instead of just talk about it, then yeah, I’m doing ‘the Latina thing.’”

She also tweeted:

AOC also talked about the disrespectful way they say her name.

“By the way: Fox News likes to say my name (incorrectly) as ‘Cortez,’ which I can only imagine is bc it sounds more ‘stereotypically’ Hispanic + probably incites more ‘anxiety’ for them,” she wrote on Twitter.

“Pro Tip: My last name is not ‘Cortez,’ just as theirs isn’t ‘Ingra’ or ‘Carl’ or Hann,’” she added.

Last month, while complaining about the Green New Deal and socialism, Fox guest Peter Morici, a University of Maryland professor, asserted that the Democratic Party “no longer believes in core American values,” telling host Stuart Varney that “what you have in Ocasio-Cortez are Latin American values.”

“Instead of us assimilating them, they are assimilating us,” Morici declared. “And they want to bring the kind of socialism that destroyed Venezuela, and frankly Mexico, here.”

The fear of “Latino assimilation” has manifested itself in policy already: the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services removed the phrase “a nation of immigrants” from its mission statement, making it clear the definition of immigrants doesn’t include everyone it used to.

By the way, Puerto Rico is an American territory, so is the Latina values takeover by an American, an American values takeover?

She proudly represents her Puerto Rican heritage, as she fights for her dream, knocking back all obstacles.

To address the the ignorance and dehumanizing fear tactics the GOP and its supporters use, she provided a little education and she tweeted with grace:
