AIG was a proud sponsor of the recent National African American Insurance Association’s (NAAIA) National Conference & Empowerment Summit, which featured AIG speakers offering their perspectives on the obstacles and opportunities African American professionals face in the insurance industry.
Cathy Duffy, AIG’s Bermuda Country Manager, spotlighted AIG’s Leadership Essentials training programs for diverse talent during a panel she moderated titled “Have D&I Initiatives Benefited African American Men in Corporate America?” at the Atlanta conference.
“At AIG, we take diversity and inclusion seriously,” Cathy said. “Language, perception, success, sponsors, advisers – all those factors come into play.”
Tackling Unconscious Bias
Yarmon Kennedy, Vice President, Strategic Planning and Analysis, Life & Retirement, who also spoke on the men’s panel, discussed AIG’s unconscious bias training.
“We have put things in place that help people transform their way of thinking, and how they perceive others sitting at the table,” he said.
Laura Gallagher, AIG’s Global Head of Corporate Citizenship, highlighted AIG’s commitment to corporate sustainability, a business approach that enhances long-term stakeholder value with a strategy that considers every dimension of how a business operates while making social, environmental and economic progress.
“When we think about the geographic reach and the expertise of the insurance industry, we have a real opportunity to make improvements in each of these areas,” Laura said as part of the “Advocacy, Accountability and Actions, Charting a Roadmap for What’s Next” panel. “We can really help the business and the larger community.”
Recognizing an Emerging Leader
Denise Campbell, AIG’s Assistant Vice President, National Accounts, received an Emerging Leader Award, which recognizes an African American who has demonstrated significant professional achievements and is considered a rising star at her company, in the industry and among her peers.
