ADP Team Attends Grace Hopper Celebration for Women in Tech

Members of ADP (No. 3 on DiversityInc’s 2019 Top Companies for Diversity) attended the Grace Hopper Celebration, the largest gathering of women technologists. Produced by AnitaB.org in partnership with the Association for Computing Machinery, the event took place Oct. 1–4 in Orlando, Fla.

ADP uses cloud technology to help companies manage human resources departments. The Grace Hopper Celebration began in 1994 as a convention for women in tech to share knowledge, network and recognize their achievements.

AnitaB.org is a nonprofit organization that works toward the goal of achieving 50/50 intersectional tech equity by 2025. Their most recent report revealed the number of women working in tech positions in companies that participated in the study has risen to 25.12% overall and 29.8% at the entry level. Research suggests that once an underrepresented demographic reaches 30% representation in an organization, its  culture begins to change.

The Grace Hopper Celebration is named after Rear Admiral Grace Hopper, the first woman to hold a doctorate in mathematics and a prominent figure in early computing. She was part of the U.S. Naval Reserve during World War II to work on the Harvard Mark I Computer, or IBM Automatic Sequence Controlled Calculator, which aided military efforts. After the war, she continued in the Navy as a reserve officer and working with the Mark II and III computers. She helped create the first compiler of computer languages as well. She became the first woman to receive the National Medal of Technology in 1991 and posthumously received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2016.

Some topics covered at this year’s event included getting ahead as a woman of color in tech leadership and navigating the tech field with a disability.
