Abbott is a mainstay on DiversityInc's list because of its commitment to talent-development and accountability. The company values diversity — of people, products, technologies and geographies — and believes that diverse perspectives and shared goals inspire new ideas and better address changing healthcare needs.
Nearly 50 percent of the members on Abbott's corporate board of directors are women and people of color. Women make up 47 percent of management and nearly half of the company's global workforce.
Abbott links executive compensation to diversity metrics. This includes individual goals such as being an executive sponsor of an employee resource group or a cross-cultural mentor, as well as corporate diversity goals.
All of the executives in the top three levels of Abbott participate in the formal mentoring program. Mentors receive cultural-awareness training, and the pairings are designed to be cross-cultural. Abbott also has formal sponsorship for high-potential employees from underrepresented groups.
Miles D. White
Chairman and CEO
"Diversity is a strength, period. It takes diversity of gender, ethnicity, and background to drive the diversity of ideas that we need to succeed. We do business in more than 150 countries; to understand and serve a rich and varied world, a broad range of perspectives isn't an option — it's essential."
Divisional Vice President, Global Talent Acquisition
"We don't think about diversity as a number or a quota — we think about it as a competitive advantage. When we can leverage diverse perspectives formed over countless decades of collective experience, this is how we move forward. This is how we can truly innovate in a global environment."
