A Female Veteran is Knocking Down Political Doors

A female Air Force veteran with 4 million ad views on her side is not only opening doors for others, but is actively bulldozing them down in the state of Texas by running up against Rep. John Carter (R-Texas).

Veteran MJ Hegar (D) is generating buzz for her new ad “Doors,” which shows viewers the many doors she opened throughout her career as a female combat flyer, along with some that were closed. Since its debut last week, the ad has generated over 2 million views on
YouTube alone, and another 2 million on Facebook.

The main door Hegar wants opened now is the one leading to Carter, who “hasn’t won a race by fewer than 20 points in a decade” according to
The Washington Post.

“Congressman Carter hasn’t had a tough race his entire career,” Hegar says in the video. “So we’ll show him tough. Then we’ll show him the door.”

Filmed in Round Rock, Texas, where she lives with her husband and kids, the video takes direct jabs at her opponent, whom she lobbied against to lift the ban on women serving in ground combat during the Obama administration.

Hegar was successful in lifting the ban, but it wasn’t with the help of Carter, who was one of many in Congress that “closed the door” in her face and refused to meet with her because she wasn’t a donor or “in a position to do anything” in return.

“Apparently being his constituent and a veteran wasn’t enough to get a meeting,” Hegar says.

After serving in Afghanistan on three separate tours and becoming the second woman to be awarded the
Distinguished Flying Cross — the second highest decoration that an Army or Air Force member can receive — Hegar is now determined to serve her community.

Running against Carter for her means “taking on a system that cares more about campaign donors and political parties than protecting our country.”
