'Let's Kill All The Blacks': Students Sing Racist Song at Dover High School

"There was nothing 'implicit' about it," said one person on Facebook. "This was an overt show of racism."

A history assignment at Dover High School in New Hampshire gave some students the idea that it would be appropriate to spew racist vitriol to the tune of "Jingle Bells."

The assignment which was for an 11th grade U.S. History class, had students change the lyrics to a Christmas jingle to tell a story about Reconstruction. Two students in the class, who represented the Ku Klux Klan, thought that it would be a good idea to alter the lyrics to include "Let's Kill All the Blacks" and "White masks on our heads, blood beneath our feet, laughing till they're dead -- ha, ha, ha."

A biracial student in the class was uncomfortable as well as offended by the lyrics.

Chloe Harris, the student in question, expressed her concerns to the teacher but because she feared nobody would believe her. So she decided to whip out her cellphone and record the incident. The video has now been taken down.

"I went to the teacher," said Harris. "I said I'm not really comfortable with these lyrics. I don't know why they need to sing it. I don't know why they need to present it in such an insensitive way."

Apparently racism is an issue at the school because Harris went on to say that she felt that nothing would be done about the situation.

"Thought if I don't record this, this is going to be the only evidence that I have that this happened and nobody's going to do anything about it," said the 16-year-old.

As the students recited the song, classmates laughed at the offensive ditty.

"When everyone was laughing I got really frustrated," said Harris. "I was like why are you guys laughing at this? So I had to walk out of class. I'm disgusted by this."

Dover School District has launched an investigation.

WIlliam Harbron, the superintendent of the school district, stated: "The principal became aware of the situation late Friday and began working with teacher. Right now we're dealing the immediate need of communication out and dealing with the emotions surrounding the situation."

A letter sent to parents read: "We are deeply concerned that an event such as this could occur and understand the emotion and concern that this event will create for our students, families and staff. Administration from Dover High School and the District are working with students and the school community to respond immediately and effectively to this racial insensitivity."

Yes, "racial insensitivity."

The teacher involved has been suspended with pay pending the investigation. School officials haven't indicated whether or not the two white male students will be disciplined.

The school has a student population of about 1300 with only 14% of the students being minorities.

Reader Question: Do you think the students who sang the song should be reprimanded?

Ya' know, for people that profess to be teachers, we have been dealt a real mess. Are a few of our teachers, I know that they are in the few, absolutely that stupid, or are they rascists that think that they have a platform? The teacher/s involved should be fired immediately. No questions asked, the proof is self-evident. Getbusy Dover, you will be held to account.

I believe they should be expelled from the School District.

They knew that the song was Racist and that people of color, would find it offensive

Are the students going to learn anything? Probably not, because the hate is in them, or it could be a shock and awe moment. Just to see how people will react! No matter the reason, it's wrong!! The students should be discipline and maybe talked to. I would really like to hear the reason of why did they do it!

Really04 Dec, 2018

Yes they should be, course it will probably do little good, its sad the lack of empathy

Margo04 Dec, 2018

Yes and ye

votetocorrect05 Dec, 2018

Lets sing the song; they made the wrong decision to be racist and got expelled and will spend years to repair their GPA's!

Viral Video Sparks Debate on Racial Disparities in How Police Use Force

A video of a white man yelling at a white cop, without physical consequences, has more than 1 million views.

Botham Jean, Jemel Roberson and Emantic Bradford Jr. were all minding their own business, not mouthing off, and they were shot dead by police. Sandra Bland questioned an officer and wound up dead in a jail cell.

So when a video of an unidentified white man spewing expletives at an officer, throwing his license at the officer, and threatening to kill the officer, without any physical consequences, started circulating on Twitter, it went viral with more than 1 million views this week.

People of color on Twitter commented that had it been them in the video, they would've had bullets in the chest by the time the truck passed:

There are studies that well document how Blacks have been treated differently by police. In the case traffic stops, whites were 57 percent more likely to be spoken to with respectful language, whereas Black drivers were 61 percent more likely to experience an exchange that was the least respectful. Officers language with the least respect included calling people, "dude, bro, boss, man, brotha, sista or chief".

FBI data found that U.S. police kill Black people at disproportionate rates: Black people accounted for 31 percent of police killing victims in 2012, even though they made up just 13 percent of the U.S. population. And 62.7 percent of unarmed people killed by police are Black.

Yet racists, and some conservatives believe the treatment is deserved because Blacks did something wrong.

For example, in Orlando's International Airport in August, a white male Trump supporter tackled to the ground by police for being a disruptive passenger knew his privilege, when he said, "You're being rough with me. You're f***ing treating me like a Black person."

Reader Question: How does the video of the white man berating the white officer make you feel?
