School Superintendent on Texans' Deshaun Watson: 'You Can't Count on a Black Quarterback'

Onalaska School Superintendent, Lynn Redden, could be in hot water after making racist statements about a Black NFL player on Facebook.

Redden made the comment in reference to the final play of the Texans’ 20-17 loss on Sunday to the Tennessee Titans.

“That may have been the most inept quarterback decision I’ve seen in the NFL,” Redden wrote referencing Deshaun Watson on a Facebook post promoting a Houston Chronicle story about the game. “When you need precision decision making you can’t count on a Black quarterback.”

Of course, Redden wishes he never made the comment and he has apologized. He also explained that he didn’t mean for the comment to come across as racist. He said he deleted it as soon as he realized it was out on the internet for the world to see, and wishes “it had never been posted.”

“I totally regret it.” Redden said. “I did not intend for the comment to come across as racist, but I understand how it may have been seen that way.”

“Over the history of the NFL, (Black quarterbacks) have had limited success,” he said.

Ironically, Redden said he has not faced any consequences for the comment as of Monday. His school district, located just about 100 miles north of Houston, serves 1,130 students and employs 175 staffers.

Onalaska happens to be one of the whitest towns in Texas with virtually no Spanish-speakers and every person was born inside the United States. Although the town has a Black population of about 8 percent, it’s certainly clear that the school’s head administrator could use some diversity training or just keep his comments to himself.
