55% of Americans Think Impeachment Inquiry Against the President Is Necessary: Poll

A poll released on Sunday found that a majority of Americans think that the impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump is necessary after a whistleblower complaint said he abused his presidential powers.

The poll shows 55% of Americans think the newly-opened probe necessary, while 45% of Americans think it’s unnecessary, CBS News reported. The poll also found that Democrats overwhelmingly approve of Congress opening an impeachment inquiry.

Instead of dividing Democrats, the impeachment inquiry seems to have united them. Most moderate Democrats side with liberal Democrats in supporting impeachment proceedings.

The poll reflects the national conversation: most Democrats call the president’s handling of matters with Ukraine illegal and deserving of impeachment, but Republicans call his actions proper or improper but still legal.

Most Americans agree that the U.S. Congress taking on the impeachment inquiry will mean it is unable to work on other pressing issues. But just slightly more Americans feel Trump deserves to be impeached: 42% believe he deserves to be impeached, 36% believes he does not deserve it and 22% say it’s too soon to say.

The inquiry began when a whistleblower complaint, including a transcript of the call, alleged that Trump wanted the president of Ukraine to investigate the Biden family in order to interfere with the 2020 election.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi opened the impeachment inquiry last week, but it’s unlikely that the Republican-controlled Senate would remove Trump from office, even if the House does. Impeachment is a lengthy process: if the House does vote for impeachment, the Senate conducts a trial and then a two-thirds majority vote is required.

That has never successfully happened.
