Mayo Clinic Announces Video Storytelling Campaign with Hispanic Patients and Doctors

ROCHESTER, Minn. — Mayo Clinic has announced the launch of a global storytelling campaign for the Hispanic community. Historias Mayo shares the stories of some of Mayo’s inspiring Hispanic patients and doctors.

[MULTIMEDIA ALERT: Video of Dr. Noseworthy is available on the Mayo Clinic News Network.]

“The legacy and history runs deep between Mayo and the Hispanic community,” says John Noseworthy, M.D., president and CEO of Mayo Clinic. “Historias Mayo celebrates and deepens that bond. It reflects our commitment to meeting the health care needs of Hispanic patients and communities worldwide.”

As a result of the international travels of Mayo’s founders Drs. William and Charles Mayo, patients from Latin America began traveling to Rochester, Minnesota, for care at Mayo Clinic in the early 1920s. Today, Mayo continues to treat thousands of patients from Latin America every year, and an ever-growing number of U.S. Hispanic patients.

“Our founders understood the value of diverse talents, backgrounds and beliefs in providing the best care to patients — and that core belief persists today at Mayo Clinic,” explains Dr. Noseworthy.

Historias Mayo reflects Mayo’s recently enhanced investment in engagement with Spanish-speaking audiences globally through community collaborations around patient care, research and education. Historias Mayo also complements Mayo’s growing influence in Hispanic social media (www.twitter.com/ClinicaMayo and www.facebook.com/MayoClinicEspanol) and its recently redesigned Spanish webpages at www.mayoclinic.org/espanol.

Historias Mayo launches with six stories:

Adrián Fernandez, Mexico’s beloved car racing champion, gives Mayo Clinic unfettered access during his 24 hours of Le Mans race in France. This video captures the intensity Fernandez faces as an elite athlete, and he reveals how Mayo Clinic has been by his side throughout his career.

Newlyweds Johanna Iturrino, M.D., and Benjamin Zendejas, M.D. are two young physicians completing their training at Mayo Clinic. They give an inside look at what it means to be Mayo Clinic residents, while sharing their heartwarming love story. Dr. Iturrino also discusses her very personal journey as a multiple sclerosis patient.

Another video follow Mayo Clinic neurologist Zbigniew Wszolek, M.D., to Bogotá, Colombia, to meet and treat the first patient in Latin America to be diagnosed with Perry syndrome, a rare genetic and fatal neurological disorder. The story documents the patient’s daughters, her Colombian neurologist and the Mayo doctor as they connect to begin their journey toward a cure for her disease.

Mayo Clinic neurologist and psychiatrist Daniel Drubach, M.D., plays classical flamenco guitar while telling his passionate story from childhood in Argentina to becoming a physician at Mayo Clinic. He weaves a ribbon between the mind, the brain and music.

Mind-body alignment plays a role in treatment of complex conditions at Mayo Clinic, and pulmonologist Roberto Benzo, M.D., an Argentine-born physician, describes how he improves patient outcomes through meditation and mindfulness practices.

Venezuela’s championship fencer Carmen Militza Perez is now Mayo Clinic’s Carmen Terzic, M.D., Ph.D. She is currently leading the world in development of adult stem cells designed to repair damaged cardiac tissue. She discusses how her past competitive spirit has driven her to a career in medicine with a goal to improve patients’ quality of life.

New patient stories will be shared on Historias Mayo throughout 2013.

###

Funding part of $5.6 million granted by CVS Caremark to increase access to health care services and children’s health-related programs

WOONSOCKET, R.I., April 3, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — The CVS Caremark Charitable Trust, a private foundation created by CVS Caremark Corporation (NYSE: CVS), announced today that $2.6 million in grants has been awarded to 66 non-profit organizations across the country to provide them with much-needed funding. The new grant recipients were chosen through the 2012 CVS Caremark Charitable Trust’s annual grant cycle. The awarded grants align with CVS Caremark’s purpose of helping people on their path to better health and focus on initiatives supporting access to health care and children’s programming.

To advance the CVS Caremark Charitable Trust’s efforts to improve the quality of health and well-being of underserved populations, grants were awarded to support innovative approaches that increase access to health care for underserved populations – including support for mobile health innovations that bring health care services to locations where people need them most.

Grants also align with CVS Caremark All Kids Can, a signature program of the CVS Caremark Charitable Trust and CVS Caremark, that is committed to helping children of all abilities to be the best that they can be by increasing access to specialized medical and rehabilitation services, and providing inclusive opportunities for physical activity, play and social enrichment.

“We are excited to help deserving non-profit organizations with the funding they need to create healthier outcomes in their local communities in 2013,” said Eileen Howard Boone, President, CVS Caremark Charitable Trust. ”All of the non-profit organizations we support share our purpose of helping people on their path to better health, and we are honored to recognize the important work they do to make a difference in the lives of children and families in the communities we serve.”

Funding from the CVS Caremark Charitable Trust will support the following key areas:

Access to Health Care
As the health care landscape continues to change, the CVS Caremark Charitable Trust is committed to funding programs that provide communities greater access to health care and medical services. Grants totaling more than $680,000 will support a wide range of services from wellness programs for military veterans to breast screenings for underserved woman. The California Schools Health Centers Association will use its grant to open three school-based health centers which will serve thousands of students in low-income communities in the Oakland area.

Coordinated Care
Of the $2.1 million, more than $285,000 will support programs that are implementing coordinated care for children with disabilities. By combining all medical and treatment services into one comprehensive plan, coordinated care can be highly effective, yet expensive. The May Institute was awarded a grant by the CVS Caremark Charitable Trust to expand access to effective treatment of autism for children in military families and to improve the coordination of their care.

Early Intervention
More than 25 percent of American children under the age of five are at risk for developmental delays or behavioral problems. Every year, 1.45 million children who are at risk for go unidentified and nearly as many children are eligible for early intervention services, but never receive them. More than $400,000 will support programs that are responding to the need of early intervention services for children, including the Marcus Autism Center which was awarded a grant to implement eye-tracking technology to diagnose children with autism earlier, thereby creating greater opportunities for early intervention services.

Inclusion
By ensuring that all children, regardless of ability, have access to similar childhood experiences without segregation or differentiation, inclusion services are instrumental to a child’s successful growth and development. The CVS Caremark Charitable Trust is providing grants totaling more than $780,000 to expand inclusive opportunities for children of all abilities to be able to learn, play and succeed side-by-side, including a grant to the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago to support adaptive sports programming for disadvantaged youth of all abilities.

In addition to the grants awarded by the CVS Caremark Charitable Trust, CVS Caremark provided more than $3 million in 2012 to support a variety of programs focused on making a positive impact in local communities, including:

Nearly $600,000 in support of national partnerships with Easter Seals, VSA and Boundless Playgrounds that are focused on making a positive impact in the lives of children with disabilities.

More than $550,000 to Pharmacy Schools for scholarship programs to support talented students.

CVS Caremark Research Finds Medication Adherence Can Improve Outcomes and Reduce Costs for Patients with Coronary Artery Disease

Findings suggest medication adherence to commonly prescribed medications can result in cost savings of up to $868 per patient per year

WOONSOCKET, R.I., March 19, 2013 /PRNewswire/ – Heart disease costs the United States $108.9 billion each year according to the Centers for Disease Control, but there are ways those costs can be controlled. Research published in the April issue of the American Journal of Medicine found that patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) who are adherent to their prescribed medications can save the health care system up to $868 per patient per year. The study, conducted by researchers at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and CVS Caremark (NYSE: CVS), found a consistent trend toward improvement in coronary artery-related events, mortality, readmissions, and costs among those patients who most adhered to their medication regimens.

(Logo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20090226/NE75914LOGO )

“Managing rising health care costs is the most pressing issue facing our health care system today,” said Troyen A. Brennan, MD, MPH, Executive Vice President and Chief Medical Officer of CVS Caremark. “This study affirms a consistent trend we have seen in research regarding the positive effect of improving medication adherence. Patients with chronic conditions are healthier when they adhere to their prescribed medication regimens and, as a result, the costs associated with their care are reduced.”

In the study, entitled “The Impact of Medication Adherence on Coronary Artery Disease Costs and Outcomes: A Systematic Review,” the researchers reviewed over 2500 studies published between 1966 and 2011, analyzing in detail the 25 studies that met the inclusion criteria related to adherence and coronary artery disease outcomes. A subset of the studies measured the impact of medication adherence on primary prevention of CAD and the remainder focused on the relationship between medication adherence and costs and outcomes related to secondary prevention of the disease. All of the studies reviewed found that adherence significantly improves health outcomes, and those that analyzed costs found reduced total annual CAD costs (consistently between $294 and $868 per patient).

While the study found consistent outcomes in cost reductions and health improvements related to better medication adherence, the researchers also identified an opportunity for greater standardization and improved research methods across medication adherence studies. The authors pointed out that many of the studies they reviewed did not account for what they refer to as the “healthy adherer” effect; noting that few of the studies they analyzed controlled for predisposed healthy behaviors in the patients that were followed.

“The research community has long believed that those patients who adhere to their medications may also be more likely to pursue a healthier lifestyle,” said Asaf Bitton, MD, MPH, lead author of the study affiliated with the Brigham and Women’s Hospital Division of General Medicine and the Harvard Medical School Center for Primary Care. “The next step from a research perspective would be to find a consistent way to control for the effect of these ‘healthy adherers’ to provide a more accurate picture of adherence for future studies and to further advance the research science in this field.”

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States for both men and women. About 600,000 people die of heart disease in the United States every year with coronary heart disease being the most common type of heart disease, killing more than 385,000 people annually.[1]

CVS Caremark has been working in a multi-year collaboration with Harvard University and Brigham and Women’s Hospital to research pharmacy claims data in order to better understand patient behavior, particularly around medication adherence. Annual excess health care costs due to medication non-adherence in the U.S. have been estimated to be as much as $290 billion annually.

About CVS Caremark
CVS Caremark is dedicated to helping people on their path to better health as the largest integrated pharmacy company in the United States.
New York Life Has Awarded More Than $235,000 Since 2004, When The Program Began

NEW YORK, March 15, 2013 – For the ninth year in a row, New York Life has awarded scholarships to five full-time undergraduate students of African-American descent who are majoring in business, maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher, and play an active role in their communities.

“New York Life is proud to support tomorrow’s leaders with scholarships that pay tribute to a trailblazer,” said Eugene Mitchell, corporate vice president and African-American market manager. “These students are carrying on in Mr. McSween’s footsteps by incorporating the same values that he lived and breathed: determination, solid moral principles, academic aspiration, honesty and humanity. We congratulate them on getting here today and wish them continued success.”

The scholarships are given in honor of New York Life’s first African-American agent, Cirilo McSween, who became an agent in 1957, qualifying for the Million Dollar Round Table (an association of leading sales professionals in the life insurance industry) that year and for 26 years thereafter. Mr. McSween, who passed away in 2008, was a member of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition’s board of directors and a renowned civil rights activist who worked closely with the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Forty-nine students have received more than $235,000 in scholarship funding since the program began in 2004. The 2012-2013 McSween Scholarship recipients are:

Ernst & Young to launch leadership network for elite
female athletes to address unmet global need

New York, 8 March 2013 — Ernst & Young has announced a new program to tap the leadership potential of elite female athletes and Olympians after their retirement from competitive sport. Leading up to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, of which Ernst & Young member firm Ernst & Young Terco is a sponsor, the three-part program will focus on 1) creating a first-of-its kind Women Athletes Global Leadership Network, 2) commissioning research on the impact of women’s advancement in sport and society, and 3) highlighting stories of inspiration.

Research has shown that a majority of executive women say that sports helped them develop leadership skills that contributed to their professional success. The Women Athletes Global Leadership Network will connect women athletes who seek meaningful careers outside their sports with retired elite athletes, including women Olympians, who successfully transitioned to a significant second career. Ernst & Young will also connect these women athletes with its robust business network of top women leaders and entrepreneurs around the world, many of whom have sports in their background. The network will be designed to share lessons learned from career transitions, to mentor, open doors and create opportunities and to inspire the next generation to maximize their potential.

To guide the overall program, Ernst & Young has commissioned new research about the connections between sports and leadership and the effect that women’s access to and participation in sports can have on education, health and global economic development.

In addition, looking toward the Rio 2016 Games, Ernst & Young will use multi-media platforms to publicize the stories of Olympic alumni and top women leaders who see sport as foundational to their success. These stories of inspiration, and the upcoming research, will focus on the impact that women have had on sport and society with a goal of further opening the playing field and advancing gender equity around the world.

“Ernst & Young has seen the power of diversity and inclusion and we want to build a better working world by expanding opportunities for women leaders. With their inherent confidence, high standards, discipline and experience in working as a team, female athletes have tremendous value for businesses like ours, governments, and NGOs around the world,” says Beth Brooke, Global Vice Chair, Public Policy, for the Ernst & Young organization, a Title IX scholarship recipient, and one of “The World’s 100 Most Powerful Women” according to Forbes. “We have a long history of convening networks, helping female entrepreneurs scale their companies, and driving the global dialogue around the advancement of women. The impact of women at the London games was historic and we want to continue this momentum by helping transform elite female athletes into exceptional leaders.”

Brooke will discuss Ernst & Young’s new program at the 2013 Laureus World Sports Awards’ “Women in Sport” press conference on Monday, March 11, at 11 a.m. BRT in Rio de Janeiro. The Laureus World Sports Awards is the premier global sports awards program honoring the greatest sportsmen and women across all sports each year, according to Laureus.

Leveraging London Games Momentum
Ernst & Young was inspired to create the network to build on the momentum at the London 2012 Olympic Games, where women represented 44% of competitors. In comparison, in the 1908 Games, when just 37 women competed, men outnumbered women 53 to one. For the first time in the history of the modern Games, in 2012, women were able to compete in all sports in the Olympic program, and all countries participating in the Olympic Games had women athletes in their delegations including, for the first time, Saudi Arabia, Brunei and Qatar.

Women’s advancement in sports has implications beyond the Olympic Games. Research shows a direct correlation between girls’ participation in sports and higher education and employment. In fact, a 2010 Study by Betsey Stevenson, former Chief Economist of the U.S. Department of Labor, found that Title IX accounted for a 20% increase in women’s education and for about a 40% rise in employment for women ages 25 to 34. At the 2012 London Games, Ernst & Young issued a white paper that more closely examined the foundation women have established in sport, the effect they are having on business and society, and the work that remains, titled, High achievers: recognizing the power of women to spur business and economic growth.

“With rewarding post-sports careers, elite women athletes – high achievers, natural leaders and team players – can make a huge impact on the next generation, their communities and the world around them. However, the transition from the field or the gym after retirement from sport can be mystifying,” noted Donna de Varona, Olympic Champion and advisor to Ernst & Young’s new program. “Too often, women athletes either reach the pinnacle of their careers at a very young age or stay in elite sports so long that they miss out on entry into the job market. They need guidance, connections and support to write the next chapter in their lives. They need mentors who have been through their journey. Ernst & Young’s program will make a huge difference in their professional lives after sport and magnify their contributions and value.”

Participants lending support to Ernst & Young’s program include leaders such as: Nawal El Moutawakel, Olympic Champion and Vice President, International Olympic Committee Member; Anita DeFrantz, Olympic Medalist and International Olympic Committee Member, Chair of Women in Sports Commission; Deedee Corradini, President, International Women’s Forum; Donna de Varona, Olympic Champion and former President, Women’s Sports Foundation; and Adriana Behar, Olympic Medalist and Brazil National Olympic Committee Member.

Women Athletes Global Leadership Network
In addition, founding members of the Network are currently being identified and will represent the five primary Olympic regions: Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe and Oceania. These founding members will then be asked to help identify women from their respective regions to join the network, with a goal of steady growth heading into the Rio 2016 Games.

The Women Athletes Global Leadership Network will comprise:

Women leaders, including female Olympic alumni and other elite athletes, who have taken what they learned in sport and applied it to a successful professional career

Olympians who are actively pursuing meaningful new careers

Women who believe in the power of mentorship and want to help and inspire other women and girls to channel their strengths and potential

“By combining the power of sport with the power of women leaders around the world, the impact is exponential,” Brooke added.

Today’s announcement builds on Ernst & Young’s long-standing support of women, which includes another unique program focused on female entrepreneurs. The Ernst & Young Entrepreneurial Winning WomenTM program is an annual competition and executive leadership program that identifies a select group of high-potential women entrepreneurs whose businesses show real potential to scale — and then helps them do it. It continues to expand around the world, with programs launching or in development across every continent, including the US, Brazil, Canada, Indonesia and Australia.

NEWS RELEASE

Despite Overall Optimism, Financial Awareness Gap Still High for
LGBT Investors, According to Wells Fargo Survey

Increased Education Remains Critical

SAN FRANCISCO, March 4, 2013 – LGBT investors indicate high levels of post-election optimism about the political and economic direction of the country, as well as confidence about their own financial future, according to a recent Wells Fargo nationwide survey. LGBT investors also show a great deal of optimism around the future of same-sex marriage and civil unions. The picture is not entirely rosy, however. Despite steps toward retirement preparation, LGBT investors remain concerned about saving enough for retirement, and there continues to be underlying confusion about transfer rights and benefits for same-sex couples.

Two-thirds (66%) of LGBT investors are optimistic about the political direction of the country, compared with 43% of the overall population. Three in four expect a stronger US economy over the next two years, much higher than the general population of 47%. And two-thirds (65%) anticipate stronger local economies over the next two years, compared to 45% overall.

LGBT investors are more positive regarding their current financial situation than the general public. Three in five (59%) report they feel financially comfortable, compared to 51% of all US adults. Two-thirds (66%) are confident in their financial future versus 52% of US adults. LGBT adults are also more likely to report being better off financially then they were three years ago (65%), compared to 51% of all adults. And two thirds (66%) feel secure in their current job situation, higher than US adults (55%).

“While optimism and confidence among LGBT investors remain high, there is clearly an awareness gap related to the very complex financial issues facing same-sex couples,” said Kyle Young, Financial Advisor and Vice-President, Investment Officer in the Short Hills, New Jersey office of Wells Fargo Advisors. “Lack of Federal recognition of same-sex couples adds many layers of challenges to retirement and estate planning for all LGBT couples. Proper analysis and planning that comes with a financial advisor who understands the landscape of today’s differing state-by-state approaches is essential.”

LGBT adults appear to be taking more steps to better save and prepare for retirement. On average, non-retired and retired LGBT adults report higher median net savings than the overall population. Over half of LGBT non-retirees (55%) report having a detailed retirement savings plan in place, compared to 42% of all adults. These LGBT respondents are more likely to have developed plans with a paid financial advisor (42%) while an additional 22% used web-based tools and calculators to assist in the process.

Nevertheless, concerns remain. Many LGBT respondents are concerned about saving enough for retirement (53%), and only 55% are confident they will be able to afford their current lifestyles in retirement. In a list of financial concerns, “saving for retirement” was the top concern for pre-retired LGBT respondents at 38%, followed by healthcare costs (18%) and paying monthly bills (16%).

LGBT adults with children consistently report more financial challenges, including preparing for retirement, than LGBT adults without children. LGBT with children feel less financially comfortable than those without (42% vs. 61%), and reported less confident in their financial future (40% with children vs. 68% without). LGBT with children are also twice as likely to report that high living expenses are limiting their ability to save for the future (51% with children vs. 26% without).

Almost all LGBT adults (92%) believe that within their lifetime, federal laws on survivor rights and benefits will become the same for same-sex couples as they are for heterosexual couples. Nearly half (43%) believe this will happen within the next three years, while 22% believe it will happen in the next four or five years.

Despite heightened attention to same-sex marriage and civil unions, tremendous confusion remains around transfer rights and benefits for same-sex couples. Nearly half (44%) of LGBT respondents did not know that Social Security income and benefits are not transferable to the spouse or partner in a same sex couple. Similarly, fewer than half (41-47%) of LGBT respondents correctly answered that other assets and benefits like real estate (47%), life insurance (44%) and retirement savings (41%) may be transferable depending on the state in which the same-sex couple resides. Only 36% of LGBT adults know that Federal taxes on survivor assets or benefits are different for the spouse/partner in a same-sex marriage than in a heterosexual marriage.

Wells Fargo Advisors – Accredited Domestic Partnership Advisor (ADPA) Program
The Accredited Domestic Partnership Advisor (ADPA) program was created, through a partnership with the College for Financial Planning, to educate advisors about the unique needs and financial considerations of domestic partners. Financial advisors who earn this designation are well-equipped to work with domestic partners and lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) clients to develop a thoughtful approach to meeting their financial goals. Wells Fargo Advisors created ADPA in conjunction with the College for Financial Planning. Today, Wells Fargo Advisors has more than 100 ADPA-certified financial advisors nationwide, more than any other firm in the country.

About the Study
These survey findings are based on an online survey conducted November 9 – December 3, 2012 among adults nationwide (N=1,105) and LGBT adults (N=606). Qualified respondents were non-students, ages 25-75, who are the primary or joint financial decision-maker in the household with household investable assets of at least $10,000. Survey results are weighted to reflect Census data for gender, age, race/ethnicity, region and household income to ensure representativeness. Assuming no sample bias, the maximum margin of error for the National sample is ± 2.9% and ± 4.0% for LGBT.

FEED began in 2006 when Lauren Bush Lauren designed a bag to benefit the United Nations World Food Programme’s School Feeding program. Followed by that success, Lauren founded FEED Projects LLC in 2007 with the mission to create good products that help feed the world. Best known for its iconic burlap bags, FEED’s projects to date have raised enough funds to provide nearly 60 million school meals to children around the world.
