Mathas was named CEO in 2008 and Chairman in 2009. Previously, he was President and Chief Operating Officer. He joined New York Life in 1995 in the Asset Management division and has held numerous leadership roles at the company, including President of broker-dealer subsidiary NYLIFE Securities; Chief Operating Officer for Life and Annuity and Executive Vice President and Co-Head of U.S. Insurance Operations.

He is a member of the board of directors of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the American Council of Life Insurers and The Financial Services Roundtable. He is also a trustee of the American Museum of Natural History and the Norfolk Collegiate School.

Mathas received a bachelor’s degree from Stanford University in 1989 and a juris doctor from the University of Virginia in 1992. He lives with his wife and three children in Westchester County, N.Y.
