Read more at http://www.thefiscaltimes.com/Articles/2013/03/29/Wetback-Comment-Yet-Another-Step-Back-for-GOP.aspx#zvUybcdL1W0bJiPR.99 " href="http://www.thefiscaltimes.com/Articles/2013/03/29/Wetback-Comment-Yet-Another-Step-Back-for-GOP.aspx#page1" target="_blank">Alaska Congressman Don Young’s recent racial slur</a>—suggest that the GOP is far from improving its <a title="Most Diverse Congress Sworn In: Diversity News" href="http://www.diversityinc.com/diversity-and-inclusion/most-diverse-congress-sworn-in/">relevancy with an increasingly diverse American population</a>.</p>
<p>During a recent interview with KRBD radio, Young “accidentally” used a racial slur when referring to the Latinos who used to work on his family’s farm.</p>
<p>“My father had a ranch. <a title="Wetback video: Racial slur for Latinos" href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&amp;v=fB3ryiR66RE" target="_blank">We used to hire 50 or 60 wetbacks</a> … to pick tomatoes. You know, it takes two people to pick the same tomatoes now. It’s all done by machine,” said Young.</p>

<p>Young immediately was slammed by both the media and his fellow GOP members for the racist comment, but it wasn’t until <a title="Boehner Demands Young Apologize" href="http://www.rollcall.com/news/boehner_demands_young_apologize-223505-1.html" target="_blank">Speaker of the House John A. Boehner</a> demanded that <a title="Young Apologizes for 'Wetback' Comment" href="http://www.rollcall.com/news/young_apologizes_for_wetback_comment-223512-1.html" target="_blank">Young apologize</a> that any sign of remorse was issued. A full three days later, Young finally said: “I apologize for the insensitive term I used. …There was no malice in my heart or intent to offend; it was a poor choice of words.” Young noted it was a term used back when he was growing up and, as such, he did not consider the term’s present-day connotations.</p>

<p>It’s an excuse—not a heartfelt apology that conveys a sense of sincerity or mindfulness, which the GOP needs to convey.</p>
<p><a title="Diversity Wins: Demographic, Psychographic Shifts Decided Election" href="http://www.diversityinc.com/diversity-and-inclusion/diversity-wins-demographic-pscychographic-shifts-decide-election/">Diversity and cultural competence have become key differentiators in political success</a>. During the 2012 presidential race, <a title="Latino vote key to Obama's re-election" href="http://www.cnn.com/2012/11/09/politics/latino-vote-key-election" target="_blank">71 percent of Latinos voted for President Obama</a>, and Latinos comprised 10 percent of the total electorate for the first time.</p>
<p><a title="GOP for White People Only? Diversity &amp; Politics" href="http://www.diversityinc.com/diversity-and-inclusion/gop-for-white-people-only/">Is the GOP for Whites Only?</a> Young’s gaffe is a classic example of yet another “we don’t get it moment,” says Mike Allen, Chief White House Correspondent for Politico. Last year, gaffes by Republican candidates such as <a title="Todd Akin Angers Women with Rape Comment" href="http://www.diversityinc.com/diversity-training/can-you-prevent-a-todd-akin-moment-at-your-organization/">Todd Akin</a> and <a title="‘God Intended’ Pregnancy After Rape, Says Romney’s Candidate" href="http://www.diversityinc.com/diversity-and-inclusion/god-intended-pregnancy-after-rape-says-romneys-candidate/">Richard Mourdock</a>, along with <a href="http://www.diversityinc.com/diversity-and-inclusion/is-jim-crow-back-racist-laws-exclude-5-million-blacks-latinos-from-polls/">racist voter laws</a>, negatively impacted voter opinions. And Young’s slur “gives critics and people who are skeptical of the party a new reason to say it hasn’t changed.”</p>
<p>What will it take for a turnaround in the Republican Party? Jason Johnson, who debated the issue on a CNN panel, had this to say in his column on <a title="Young's Wetback Comment Doesn't Change GOP" href="http://politic365.com/2013/03/31/how-alaska-rep-don-youngs-wetback-comment-doesnt-change-the-gop/" target="_blank">Politic365.com</a>:</p>
<blockquote><p>One of the problems that the Republican Party has about race issues is that the party is full of non-repentant bigots who want to treat racism like it’s an outlier and exceptional instead of the basic thought process of many, many (all too many) Americans. Earlier today I was on CNN with Amy Holmes from the Blaze (Glenn Beck TV) and she responded with the typical talking points of the GOP: “Joe Biden says racist things too,” “Other Democrats have said racist things,” etc., etc. Trying to place blame on all sides does not solve the GOP’s major electoral and reputational problem. All Republicans, white people, conservatives and Southerners are not racists. In fact, the majority of these groups are not necessarily racist. <b>However, the GOP refuses to take responsibility for its own bad press and would rather say that the media is blowing things out of proportion, unfairly targeting its members (instead of Democrats) or that Blacks and Latinos are too sensitive. All of these outfits and fashion flips rather than cleaning up their act.</b></p></blockquote>
<p>The biggest issue for Johnson? The level of comfort with which Young said “wetback,” he writes, is representative of the “casual simple ‘it’s a fact’ bigotry that is churned out every day in the halls of power, where denying someone a job, acceptance into a college or a promotion is not the result of some large diabolical plot, it’s just how large portions of white people have done things in America for years and continue to do.”</p>

Not as a whole, but <a title="Brief Supporting Same-Sex Marriage Gets More Republican Support" href="http://www.nytimes.com/2013/02/28/us/politics/gay-marriage-brief-gets-more-republican-support.html?_r=0" target="_blank">more than 100 Republican officials are voicing their support for same-gender-marriage rights</a>. This week, they signed a brief seeking to persuade the Supreme Court to strike down <a title="Prop 8 Decision Analysis" href="http://www.hrc.org/blog/entry/prop-8-decision-analysis?utm_source=google&amp;utm_medium=cpc&amp;utm_campaign=grant&amp;gclid=COeXgPbl1rUCFYqf4AodjQQAZg" target="_blank">Proposition 8</a>, the <a title="What is Defense of Marriage Act?" href="http://www.hrc.org/laws-and-legislation/federal-legislation/respect-for-marriage-act?gclid=CPyd4uTl1rUCFYtU4Aod0G4ADg" target="_blank">Defense of Marriage Act</a> (DOMA) and similar same-gender-marriage bans.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2013/02/28/business/companies-ask-justices-to-overturn-gay-marriage-ban.html" title="Corporate Call for Change in Gay Marriage Case" target="_blank">More than 200 corporations</a> also have filed <a href="http://www.americanbenefitscouncil.org/documents2013/amicus_doma022713.pdf" title="Corporate Amicus Brief Supporting Overturn of DOMA" target="_blank">a separate brief</a> urging the Supreme Court to overturn DOMA. These companies include: Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, Boehringer Ingelheim, Boston Scientific, Ernst &#038; Young, Exelon, Johnson &#038; Johnson, Marriott International, MassMutual, The McGraw-Hill Companies, Microsoft, New York Life, The Ogilvy Group, Pfizer, State Street Corporation, Xerox and The Walt Disney Company.</p>
<p>The Republicans&#8217; brief presents the Supreme Court justices with a detailed argument about the discrimination Prop 8 and DOMA inflict. The <a title="Supreme Court to Hear Prop 8, DOMA Cases" href="http://www.diversityinc.com/diversity-and-inclusion/breaking-news-supreme-court-to-hear-prop-8-doma-cases/">Supreme Court is scheduled to hear cases on Prop 8 and DOMA</a> legislation starting next week, with a final decision expected before the summer. The rulings on these two major cases could impact nationally the definition of marriage and same-gender couples’ right to wed, as previously reported by DiversityInc. Both legislations define marriage as a union between a man and a woman.</p>

<p>Legal experts say <a title="Once 'inconceivable,' Republican leaders sign pro-gay marriage brief" href="http://usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/02/26/17102594-once-inconceivable-republican-leaders-sign-pro-gay-marriage-brief?lite" target="_blank">the brief could help sway conservative Supreme Court justices</a> in favor of striking down the same-gender-marriage bans, especially in light of the prominent names on the list. These include:</p>

<p>“We are trying to say to the court that we are judicial and political conservatives, and it is consistent with our values and philosophy for you to overturn Proposition 8,” <a title="Ken Mehlman's Gay-Marriage Mission" href="http://www.newyorker.com/online/blogs/newsdesk/2013/02/ken-mehlmans-republican-gay-marriage-mission.html" target="_blank">Ken Mehlman</a>, former Chairman of the Republican National Committee, told The New York Times. Mehlman, who is out as gay, serves on the board of the American Foundation for Equal Rights.</p>
<p>There have been sweeping changes in public attitudes toward same-gender unions in the past few years—<a title="Support for Gay Marriage Growing, but U.S. Remains Divided" href="http://www.nytimes.com/2012/12/08/us/justices-consider-same-sex-marriage-cases-for-docket.html" target="_blank">49 percent of Americans now agree that states should allow same-sex marriage</a>, according to a Pew Research Center poll. This is up from just 39 percent in 2008.</p>

<p>What should you do if one of your executives uses a negative stereotype, especially in a public forum? How can you make sure your workplace doesn’t tolerate these types of damaging misconceptions, which impact morale and productivity? Learn a lesson from recent verbal missteps by presidential hopefuls Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum and see what Dr. Claude Steele advises you to do.</p>
<p>Gingrich announced that “If the NAACP invites me, I’ll go to their convention and talk about why the African-American community should demand paychecks and not be satisfied cultural competence with food stamps.”</p>
<p>NAACP President and CEO Ben Jealous called the statement “inaccurate and divisive.”</p>
<p>Santorum said at a campaign stop in Iowa: “I don’t want to make Black people’s lives better by giving them somebody else’s money. I want to give them the opportunity to go out and earn the money.” After getting national criticism for the remark, he said he was “pretty confident that I didn’t say ‘Black,’” but the video shows that he did indeed say that. <a href="http://www.mediaite.com/tv/rick-santorum-to-john-king-i-didnt-say-black-people-i-said-blah-people/" target="_blank">Watch the video.</a></p>
<p>Dr. Steele, dean of education at Stanford University and former provost of Columbia University, is the author of “Whistling Vivaldi: And Other Clues to How Stereotypes Affect Us.” Dr. Steele, who <a href="../diversity-events/the-stereotype-threat-dr-claude-steele-mesmerizes-audience-video/" target="_blank">analyzed these stereotypes</a> at a <a href="http://diversityinc.com/diversity-inc-2012-event-series/" target="_blank">DiversityInc event</a>, told us that statements like these have long-term impact on workplace engagement and productivity. <a href="http://diversityinc.com/generaldiversityissues/how-do-stereotypes-affect-us/" target="_blank">Watch the video.</a></p>
<p>“As my work has taught me and illustrates, stereotypes are not innocent or easily ignorable. They create pressures on people to see others in those stereotypes and degrade the quality of life for people who are stereotyped. They have a profound effect of creating discomforts that are attached to our identities,” he said. “Politicians resort to reinforcing old stereotypes about groups because it gives people belief that these things still are true … it creates a sense of social reality. Even though Obama’s the president, it keeps them alive.”</p>
<p>What would he recommend you do if someone in your organization perpetuated a stereotype? Be true to your values. “If I were leading an organization and this happened, if the opportunity arose in a naturalistic way, I’d condemn it and say this is something to be ashamed of. That’s what happened in the civil-rights movement; I’m old enough to remember when you could use the N-word in Congress, and that’s not acceptable anymore,” Dr. Steele said. </p>

<p>The real danger, Claude emphasized, is in people accepting these stereotypes. “These people are dangerously trafficking in stereotypes and making this a normative behavior. That’s what happens eventually; behavior shifts and these are no longer the norm,” Dr. Steele said.</p>
<p>And people often accept these statements without checking the facts. For example, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, known as SNAP, offers food stamps. PolitiFact says participation is high, but that’s because of efforts since the Bush administration to increase participation. The largest group of SNAP recipients is white people, and most SNAP participants are younger than 18.</p>
<p>Facts are important in diversity work and in destroying stereotypes. Here are some diversity-management lessons demonstrated by companies in the <a href="http://diversityinc.com/the-diversityinc-top-50-companies-for-diversity-2011/" target="_blank">DiversityInc Top 50</a> to address stereotypes in your organization. </p>
<p><strong>Ensure Diversity Training Is Mandatory</strong></p>
<p>Seventy-eight percent of the DiversityInc Top 50 require mandatory <a href="http://diversityincbestpractices.com/retention-worklife/diversity-training-goes-way-beyond-compliance/" target="_blank">cultural-competence training</a> for their managers, and 66 percent require it for their entire workforce. While one can’t regulate what comes out of an employee’s mouth, teaching people about the need for respectful speech, as well as what type of speech is hateful, goes a long way to avoiding these types of hurtful communications.</p>

<p><strong>Get the Message Out Externally and Internally, Starting at the Top</strong></p>
<p>From your CEO’s statement on diversity (which should be on your <a href="http://diversityincbestpractices.com/topic/ceo-commitment/visbility/website-mission-statement/" target="_blank">corporate homepage</a>) to your mission statement to all your external and internal communications, the message of respect and inclusion has to be clear and constant. Allowing any stereotypes for any group, including white men, to be perpetuated in any way by your company opens the door for these kinds of comments. A no-tolerance-for-disrespect policy, from the highest ranks of the company on down, must be clearly and consistently articulated.</p>
<p><strong>Mandate Cross-Cultural Mentoring—Allow Senior Leadership to ‘Walk in Others’ Shoes’</strong></p>
<p>Formal, <a href="http://diversityincbestpractices.com/topic/mentoring/mentoring-mentoring/cross-cultural/" target="_blank">cross-cultural mentoring</a> relationships enable people from different backgrounds to really get to know each other and enhance cultural awareness, especially for senior, white, male executives. The one-on-one nature of the relationship, both studies and DiversityInc data show, are critical to that increased knowledge. Progressively more companies also require both mentors and mentees to undergo cultural-competence training before beginning the formal mentoring arrangement. Ninety-four percent of DiversityInc Top 50 companies now have formal, cross-cultural mentoring programs.</p>
<p><strong>Expose CEOs and Senior Executives to Different Employees Through ERGs</strong></p>
