During a recent interview with KRBD radio, Young “accidentally” used a racial slur when referring to the Latinos who used to work on his family’s farm.

“My father had a ranch. We used to hire 50 or 60 wetbacks … to pick tomatoes. You know, it takes two people to pick the same tomatoes now. It’s all done by machine,” said Young.

Young immediately was slammed by both the media and his fellow GOP members for the racist comment, but it wasn’t until Speaker of the House John A. Boehner demanded that Young apologize that any sign of remorse was issued. A full three days later, Young finally said: “I apologize for the insensitive term I used. …There was no malice in my heart or intent to offend; it was a poor choice of words.” Young noted it was a term used back when he was growing up and, as such, he did not consider the term’s present-day connotations.

It’s an excuse—not a heartfelt apology that conveys a sense of sincerity or mindfulness, which the GOP needs to convey.

Diversity and cultural competence have become key differentiators in political success. During the 2012 presidential race, 71 percent of Latinos voted for President Obama, and Latinos comprised 10 percent of the total electorate for the first time.

Is the GOP for Whites Only? Young’s gaffe is a classic example of yet another “we don’t get it moment,” says Mike Allen, Chief White House Correspondent for Politico. Last year, gaffes by Republican candidates such as Todd Akin and Richard Mourdock, along with racist voter laws, negatively impacted voter opinions. And Young’s slur “gives critics and people who are skeptical of the party a new reason to say it hasn’t changed.”

What will it take for a turnaround in the Republican Party? Jason Johnson, who debated the issue on a CNN panel, had this to say in his column on Politic365.com:

One of the problems that the Republican Party has about race issues is that the party is full of non-repentant bigots who want to treat racism like it’s an outlier and exceptional instead of the basic thought process of many, many (all too many) Americans. Earlier today I was on CNN with Amy Holmes from the Blaze (Glenn Beck TV) and she responded with the typical talking points of the GOP: “Joe Biden says racist things too,” “Other Democrats have said racist things,” etc., etc. Trying to place blame on all sides does not solve the GOP’s major electoral and reputational problem. All Republicans, white people, conservatives and Southerners are not racists. In fact, the majority of these groups are not necessarily racist. However, the GOP refuses to take responsibility for its own bad press and would rather say that the media is blowing things out of proportion, unfairly targeting its members (instead of Democrats) or that Blacks and Latinos are too sensitive. All of these outfits and fashion flips rather than cleaning up their act.

The biggest issue for Johnson? The level of comfort with which Young said “wetback,” he writes, is representative of the “casual simple ‘it’s a fact’ bigotry that is churned out every day in the halls of power, where denying someone a job, acceptance into a college or a promotion is not the result of some large diabolical plot, it’s just how large portions of white people have done things in America for years and continue to do.”

This time, it’s the liberals who are accused of being racist—and with good cause. A liberal Super Political Action Committee (PAC) in Kentucky tweeted that GOP Senator Mitch McConnell’s wife, former Labor Secretary Elaine Chao, was using her connections to send jobs to China, and included a link to an earlier article accusing her of racism toward U.S. workers.

The Super PAC, Progress Kentucky, is committed to defeating McConnell in his bid for reelection. The comments about Chao and China were posted only on Twitter. They were along the lines of this tweet: “This woman has the ear of @McConnellPress — she’s his #wife. May explain why your job moved to #China.” The tweets also said Chao’s “Chinese money” was buying the election for McConnell; her family has given more than $80,000 to her husband’s campaign.

Chao, whose family is from Taiwan, moved to the United States when she was 8. She was President George W. Bush’s Secretary of Labor and now is a Distinguished Fellow at the conservative think tank The Heritage Foundation.

McConnell’s team said the tweets were “race-baiting.” Specifically, Campaign Manager Jesse Benton said: “We just think this kind of race-baiting has absolutely no place in American politics. We think Progress Kentucky should really be ashamed of what’s been going out under their name. People should be fired and a public apology should be issued. I think everybody of good conscience in Kentucky should agree that these sort of attacks should be pushed to the side.”

Progress Kentucky Executive Director Shawn Reilly said: “Progress Kentucky strongly denies that the organization has engaged in any such thing. Benton’s statements are an attempt to divert attention from the fact that Mitch McConnell has engaged in the selling of the American middle class overseas for decades.”

However, both the Kentucky Democratic Party and actress Ashley Judd, a Democrat who is expected to challenge McConnell, denounced Progress Kentucky for the tweets.

Whatever the intention, whatever the venue, whomever the person, attacks or comments on anyone’s ethnicity are wrong & patently unacceptable

Reilly later issued an apology, saying: “We apologize to the secretary for that unnecessary comment and have deleted the tweets in question. In addition, we have put a review process in place to ensure tweets and other social media communications from Progress Kentucky are reviewed and approved prior to posting.”

Stereotypes and broad assumptions based on racial/ethnic generalities aren’t acceptable, no matter what issues a group stands for or who says them. Not as a whole, but more than 100 Republican officials are voicing their support for same-gender-marriage rights. This week, they signed a brief seeking to persuade the Supreme Court to strike down Proposition 8, the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and similar same-gender-marriage bans.

More than 200 corporations also have filed a separate brief urging the Supreme Court to overturn DOMA. These companies include: Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, Boehringer Ingelheim, Boston Scientific, Ernst & Young, Exelon, Johnson & Johnson, Marriott International, MassMutual, The McGraw-Hill Companies, Microsoft, New York Life, The Ogilvy Group, Pfizer, State Street Corporation, Xerox and The Walt Disney Company.

The Republicans’ brief presents the Supreme Court justices with a detailed argument about the discrimination Prop 8 and DOMA inflict. The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear cases on Prop 8 and DOMA legislation starting next week, with a final decision expected before the summer. The rulings on these two major cases could impact nationally the definition of marriage and same-gender couples’ right to wed, as previously reported by DiversityInc. Both legislations define marriage as a union between a man and a woman.

Legal experts say the brief could help sway conservative Supreme Court justices in favor of striking down the same-gender-marriage bans, especially in light of the prominent names on the list. These include:

Theodore B. Olson, Solicitor General under President George W. Bush and co-counsel in the Prop 8 lawsuit

Meg Whitman, former Prop 8 supporter and one-time candidate for Governor of California who now is the President and CEO of HP

Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (Florida)

Congressman Richard Hanna (New York)

Stephen J. Hadley, National Security Adviser under Bush

Carlos Gutierrez, Commerce Secretary under Bush and former Chairman and CEO of Kellogg Company

James B. Comey, Deputy Attorney General under Bush

David A. Stockman, Director of the Office of Management and Budget under President Ronald Reagan

Deborah Pryce, former eight-term Congresswoman and Chair of the House Republican Conference

By Barbara Frankel

After I saw the movie Lincoln, I wondered: When did the Republican Party go from being the champion of inclusion to advocating the “politics of nullification”?

The answer is analyzed in a fascinating and important new article in The New Republic, “Original Sin: Why the GOP is and will continue to be the party of white people.” The author, Sam Tanenhaus, is the editor of The New York Times Book Review and an astute observer of political history and the ramifications of ideology.

Tanenhaus was interviewed on CNBC’s Squawk Box this weekend and his controversial ideas were put to the test. “This article is going to get some people a little crazy,” said Squawk Box host Andrew Ross Sorkin. He cited the GOP’s “new diversity” and rising stars such as Florida Senator Marco Rubio as a means of disagreeing with Tanenhaus’ central point. Sorkin was joined by co-host Joe Kernen, former Vermont Governor and Democratic National Committee Chairman Dr. Howard Dean, and CNBC commentator Michelle Caruso-Cabrera, who described herself as a conservative Hispanic.

Tanenhaus contends that the GOP dominated U.S. politics from 1968 to 1988 through “a strategy of polarization that essentially gathered up much of the population against … African-Americans.” He noted that before the November election, there was great concern by political analysts about how President Obama might not receive even 40 percent of the white male vote. “Three or four election cycles ago, that would have ruined him. Today, that is the minority in this country. It’s not just African-Americans; it’s Asians, it’s Latinos, it’s women who see themselves as an outsider group—this is the new majority that Republicans have to deal with,” Tanenhaus said on the show.

Actually, according to The Atlantic, Obama’s voters were 56 percent white, 24 percent Black, 14 percent Latino and 4 percent Asian, while Romney’s were 88 percent white, 6 percent Latino, 2 percent Black and 2 percent Asian.

Tanenhaus agreed with the view of Wall Street Journal political reporter Neil King, who spoke at DiversityInc’s Innovation Fest last week, that the changing demographics of the electorate are making white people—and the white people’s party—an anachronism quickly. That point was also stressed by DiversityInc CEO Luke Visconti in his column Diversity Wins: Demographics, Psychographic Shifts Decided Election. Tanenhaus delved deeply into the reasons why the GOP has failed to understand the changing electorate and why it may just put itself out of business shortly. Watch the video.

Asked by the hosts about the business angle, since CNBC’s main audience is business executives, Tanenhaus noted that corporate America “has been pretty good on race,” specifically with affirmative action and corporate diversity programs.

Caruso-Cabrera also took exception to Tanenhaus’ theories. “As a Hispanic conservative I reject some of the underlying premise in terms of rejection of affirmative action. Republicans are not necessarily rejecting affirmative action because they’re anti-minority; it’s because they don’t want to tell businesses how to do their business,” she said.

The Republican party’s issues, Tanenhaus argued, are more ideological. “These are the two oldest parties in Western democracy, and one of them has a long history of not being so great in civil rights,” he said.

Dean disagreed, noting that he believes the Republican Party does have a future but that it’s been captured by a hard-line conservative minority and its leaders need to stand up to that group.

When asked if Lincoln was the last nonracist Republican president, Tanenhaus became irritated and asked the hosts “if anyone actually read my article?” They responded that they had, indeed, read it.

What He Really Said About the GOP

You can read Tanenhaus’ eloquent but very lengthy article for yourself, but to summarize: He notes that while President Eisenhower advocated for civil rights (and Brown v. Board of Education occurred on Eisenhower’s watch), the GOP in the early 1950s drew on the theories of 19th century politician John C. Calhoun, a South Carolina slavery apologist who believed in “institutional democracy” and states’ rights that “became the justification for conservative politicians to resist, ignore, or even overturn the will of the electoral majority.” Calhoun basically said that states can ignore federal actions by saying they are not valid, which Tanenhaus refers to as “nullification.”

Calhoun “called slavery ‘a positive good’ and ridiculed the Declaration’s ‘all men are created equal.’” (“Taking the proposition literally,” Calhoun once said, “there is not a word of truth in it.”) Years later in The National Review, William F. Buckley’s editorial “Why the South Must Prevail” defended voting restrictions as the region’s right.

The era of Barry Goldwater and Democrat George Wallace of Alabama heightened the racial politics, which went “into remission” under Richard Nixon, Tanenhaus indicated, but came back full force under Ronald Reagan, under whom efforts were made to roll back affirmative action. George W. Bush’s success with Latinos was attributed directly to tax and educational initiatives he supported while governor of Texas. In the era of Romney—and after—Tanenhaus contends that better recruitment of Blacks and Latinos isn’t enough.

The image of the “angry black man” still purveyed by sensationalists such as Ann Coulter and Dinesh D’Souza is anachronistic today, when blacks and even Muslims, the most conspicuous of “outsider” groups, profess optimism about America and their place in it. A politics of frustration and rage remains, but it is most evident within the GOP’s dwindling base—its insurgents and anti-government crusaders, its “middle-aged white guys.” They now form the party’s one solid bloc, its agitated concurrent voice, struggling not only against the facts of demography, but also with the country’s developing ideas of democracy and governance.

A recent group photo of Obama and his advisers in the White House published by The New York Times pinpointed what many have been noticing—a huge lack of racial and gender diversity. Is he shortchanging the millions of Blacks, Latinos and women who propelled his election win?

Public figures are weighing in with their dissatisfaction: Former Labor Secretary Elaine Chao said, “I think [Obama] can do better;” and Congressman Charlie Rangel said the lack of diversity on Obama’s team was “embarrassing as hell. … He’s had four years to work the bench, to work the second team, so that in the second term, these people should be just as experienced as any other American.” Watch the video interview with Rangel.

Is There Really a Lack of Diversity?

The three people the President has nominated so far—John Kerry as Secretary of State, Jack Lew as Secretary of Treasury and Chuck Hagel as Secretary of Defense—are all white men. With two appointments still in the works, the 16-member Cabinet will be at least 69 percent white and at least 69 percent male. (Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis, a Latina, and Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar, a Latino, have announced their resignations, but replacements have not been nominated.)

“I’m very proud that in the first four years we had as diverse, if not more diverse, a White House and a cabinet than any in history,” Obama says. “And I intend to continue that.” A diverse team, he added, “helps to create more effective policy-making and better decision-making for me because it brings different perspectives to the table.”

“Women are well-represented in the president’s senior staff here,” Jay Carney, White House Press Secretary, adds. “Two of the three deputy chiefs of staff are women. The White House counsel is a woman. A woman runs Homeland Security for this country, Secretary [Janet] Napolitano. … The Cabinet secretary in charge of the most important piece of domestic-policy legislation in a generation is a woman, [Secretary of Health and Human Services] Kathleen Sebelius.”

According to White House personnel data compiled by The New York Times, the Obama Administration has improved the number of women appointees by 10 percent to 43 percent, up from 33 percent in George W. Bush’s administration and about the same ratio as Bill Clinton’s (41 percent).

But with a campaign strongly based on a message of change—and diversity—Obama’s seemingly not happy with a meager 10 percent bump either. “Word from the White House is that the President himself is irritated, and demanding answers about the faces his staff is pushing forward. Unfortunately, he has only a bunch of white guys to offer an explanation of why the picture looks like a bunch of white guys,” writes New York Times Op-Ed columnist Maureen Dowd, a Pulitzer Prize winner. She notes that some women on the White House staff say they “are privately gratified at the latest kerfuffle, hoping it will shut down the West Wing man cave.”

Obama & Diversity: The Picture Worth a Thousand Words

Chatter about the Cabinet’s lack of diversity began building when Obama nominated several white men—Senator John Kerry as Secretary of State, Senator Chuck Hagel as Secretary of Defense and, most recently, Jack Lew as Secretary of the Treasury—and news surfaced of two female Cabinet members’ resigning: Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Solis.

The controversy came to a head when The New York Times ran a photo of Obama sitting in the Oval Office with 10 of his advisers—all 10 were male, and all but one were white. Senior Adviser and Chair of the White House Council on Women and Girls Valerie Jarrett was also in the room—but only part of her leg was visible in the shot because she was upstaged by one of the white men.

Obama’s New National Security Team [see the SlideDeck]

Obama has been under fire since from a wide range of high-profile media sources: Bloomberg View’s Margaret Carlson says “He doesn’t look beyond his nose for more minority recruits”; The Washington Post’s Ruth Marcus says, “About all those white guys: What a shame. Not an outrage, but a shame”; CBS News Political Director John Dickerson says, “Look, Mr. President, you won your election based on the votes of women and minorities, so you should respect that in your naming of the cabinet picks.” Fifty-five percent of women, 93 percent of Blacks and 71 percent of Latinos voted for Obama, according to CNN exit-poll data.

In May 2012, Obama similarly received disapproval for a photo of his majority white campaign staff; only two members were Black, which is far below the 13 percent representation in the national population and the 33 percent representation in Chicago.

A record number of Blacks, Latinos, Asians and women now hold seats among the 535 Senate and House of Representatives members. And the diversity goes beyond race/ethnicity and gender. Congress is:

8 percent Black: a total of 43

6 percent Latino: a total of 32

5.6 percent Asian: a total of 30

18.9 percent women: a total of 101. Read facts about the congresswomen.

Four Arab Americans and one Caribbean American were also elected to Congress

Diversity in religion and sexual orientation also increased: The first Buddhist senator, Senator Mazie Hirondo; the first Hindu representative, Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard; the only Unitarian Universalist, Congresswoman Ami Bera; the first openly gay senator, Senator Tammy Baldwin; the first nonwhite LGBT, Congressman Mark Takano; and the first openly bisexual woman and only atheist, Congresswoman Kyrsten Sinema, were also sworn in.

Among the new faces of the 113th Congress are: 4 Blacks, 10 Latinos, 6 Asians, 5 LGBTs and 24 women. Plus, four of the incoming congressional representatives are of the Millennial generation, born in the 1980s.

Changing Diversity: What Will Election 2016 Look Like?

Will this diverse mindset continue to make its way into the upper echelon of the political parties?

Although diversity made significant headway in the recent election, the overwhelming majority of congressional representatives (80 percent) are white and male. In the House, for example, there are 42 Blacks, 35 Latinos, 11 Asians and 2 American Indians, according to House Press Gallery, but together that accounts for only about one-fifth of all representatives. Moreover, the House has 81 women, which is 18.6 percent of the total number of representatives, but the United States is 50.8 percent women.

But that’s poised to change in the next election. Anticipated diverse candidates on the Democratic side for the 2016 presidential race include three women: former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand and Senator Elizabeth Warren. The GOP’s rising stars include three women: Senator Kelly Ayotte, Governor Nikki Haley and Governor Susana Martinez; three Latinos: Senator Marco Rubio, Governor Brian Sandoval and Martinez; and two Asians: Governor Bobby Jindal and Haley.

The 2012 election results show that voters, particularly Millennials, are more than ready for a change and are looking for leadership that more accurately reflects the country’s increasingly diverse population.

Non-Hispanic white populations will decrease drastically by the year 2050, according to Census Bureau data, from 71.6 percent to 46.3 percent, and Latino populations will increase significantly from 11.3 percent to 30.3 percent. Asian populations will grow to 6.3 percent from 4.4 percent, and Black populations will tick up from 12.8 percent to 12.9 percent. More than half (50.4 percent) of babies born in the United States in 2011 were Black, Latino or Asian, per the Census Bureau.

Additionally, Pew Research reports that Asians are the fastest growing demographic, growing 43.3 percent between 2000 and 2010. Comparatively, the Latino population grew 43 percent, and the Black population grew 12.3 percent. The white population grew 5.7 percent during the same period.

Millennials are the most racially and ethnically diverse demographic in history, per Pew Research: 18.5 percent are Latino; 14.2 percent are Black; 4.3 percent are Asian; 3.2 percent are mixed race or other. Only 59.8 percent are white, the lowest percentage to date. In the 2012 election, 60 percent of individuals ages 18-29—which totals 19 percent of all voters—cast ballots for Obama. And just as new and youthful mindsets about diversity helped win this past election, it’s this more-inclusive generation of Millennials that will continue to be a driving force in deciding the outcomes of future elections.

Senate Deal: Diversity Takes Back Seat to Power in Albany" href="http://www.nytimes.com/2012/12/07/nyregion/in-gop-state-senate-deal-diversity-takes-back-seat.html" target="_blank">stonewall diversity progress.

Republicans and a group of five Democrats in Albany formed a “bipartisan governing coalition” to secure a majority hold on the Senate. According to lawmakers interviewed by the New York Times, their goal is to keep Blacks, Latinos and Asians out of Senate leadership positions and hinder legislation that could help nonwhite communities in one of America’s most diverse states.

The Democrats appeared to win control of the senate in November’s election, but the coalition will allow the GOP and the Independent Democrats to effectively overpower the Senate Democratic caucus, which includes 14 Black and Latino lawmakers and is the only legislative caucus in Albany headed by a nonwhite person, John L. Sampson of Brooklyn. The deal would also grant the coalition members equal authority in all state budget decisions and committee assignments, including committee appointments.

Democratic legislators argue that the deal undermines the state’s Black, Latino and Asian voters. “This coalition of convenience will limit the elevation of people that communities of color elected all across the state to positions of significance,” Democratic Assemblyman Hakeem S. Jeffries told the Times. It could also impact pending legislation such as raising the minimum wage, changing marijuana-possession laws to reduce stop-and-frisk arrests, and helping children of undocumented immigrants pay for higher education.

What’s the lesson they can learn from corporate America? Organizations that are not representative of their constituencies fail to connect with them. In business, that means a lack of market share and profitability. In the public sector, that means legislation that does not benefit the majority of the citizens, subverting the democratic process.

This time, it wasn’t about the excitement of “hope” and “change.” It was a campaign that seemed to me to be rather uninspiring and visionless, in the middle of a searing, aching, endless recession that is destroying more household wealth than anything in 80 years. And in who won lies a lesson for business.

This election was about diversity. As I watched John King go over the election map on CNN the night of the election, it was clear to me that there were key counties in key states that were going to determine the electoral college—and that diversity was determining the trends overall as well. Of the nine battleground states, the President Obama lost only North Carolina.

If you look at who voted for each candidate, the demographics shaped up as older and whiter versus younger and multiethnic. I think Neil King’s analysis in the above video is exactly right. One amazing number is that Asian voters went from 2 percent of the total votes four years ago to 3 percent on Tuesday—but almost 75 percent of Asians voted for the president. In the end, youth will win over age and our country will become more than 50 percent nonwhite by 2043. (This year was the first time there were more nonwhite births than white births.) What most people fail to comprehend is that the rising trend influences the declining demographic: As families become more diverse, as recognition and respect of LGBT relatives becomes a part of more family realities, as the less-diverse old realize they need to have the support of the more-diverse young to pay for their Medicare, the demographic shift becomes a seismic psychographic shift.

Going beyond just the presidential race, there were remarkable wins for women candidates and same-gender marriage initiatives, and stunning, complete losses for male candidates who decided their opinions on rape and pregnancy were important to discuss. This election is a clear mandate from the voters.

Here are major victories to note:

Women Candidates Elected at Historic Numbers

At least 19 women will occupy seats in Congress, increasing the total number of women by 12 percent (from 17 to 19). This marks a new high in United States history.

Women that won reelection were: Sens. Maria Cantwell (Wash.), Dianne Feinstein (Calif.), Kirsten Gillibrand (N.Y.), Amy Klobuchar (Minn.), Claire McCaskill (Mo.) and Debbie Stabenow (Mich.). Deb Fischer (Neb.), Tammy Baldwin (Wis.), Mazie Hirono (Hawaii) and Elizabeth Warren (Mass.) will join the Senate. Additionally, according to the Center for American Women in Politics at Rutgers, about half of all Senate races had at least one female candidate.

Openly Gay Candidates Gain Seats in Senate & House

It was a landmark election for LGBT candidates, as seven of the eight running for seats won. Baldwin became the first openly gay person elected to the Senate; two openly gay Congressmen (Jared Polis of Colo. and David Cicilline of R.I.) won reelection; and as many as four other first-time candidates—including openly bisexual Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona—could be sworn in come January.
