SSM Health Care: No. 5 in The DiversityInc Top 10 Hospital Systems

Hospital Information

U.S. Headquarters: St. Louis
U.S Employees: 25,297
Last Year’s Top 5 Hospital Systems Ranking: Not in Top 5

Why It’s on the List

SSM Health Care, a St. Louis–based health system of 18 hospitals and several other entities, earns a spot on the Hospital Systems list with strong management representation and promotions for women, and with more than half its managers participating in its formal mentoring program—of which 68 percent of its pairs are cross-cultural.

SSM started tracking its diversity efforts in 1990 to increase the number of women in leadership roles and began keeping its Diversity Scorecard in 2005. The scorecard is available to the public on the system’s website.  The efforts have paid off: SSM has 60 percent more women at its second level of executives and double the percentage of women at its third level than the DiversityInc Top 50 average.

The hospital system has 24 resource groups, used for recruitment, talent development, community outreach and on-boarding. Senior executives are members of the groups, which are used to help with mandatory diversity training. Their success is measured in the annual Diversity Scorecard.

SSM’s supplier-diversity effort is strong and system-wide: Each SSM location commits to a 10 percent discretionary-spending goal as part of its program to use Minority Business Enterprises.

Diversity Leadership
William Thompson
President/CEO

“Diversity has always been one of our priorities at SSM Health Care. In 1933 in St. Louis, our founding congregation opened the first Catholic hospital in the nation for African-Americans. Not only did it serve African-Americans, it gave African-American doctors and nurses a place to practice their professions.

“To this day, we continue to focus on diversity. We serve people from many different cultural backgrounds, and we want to ensure that every patient is treated with dignity and the utmost respect. We also believe that the diversity of people within our healthcare facilities should reflect the diverse makeup of our communities.”

Yvonne Tisdel
Corporate Vice President – Human Resources and System Diversity

“SSM Health Care is a Mission and Values based health care system. Inspired by our founding religious sisters, we value the sacredness and dignity of each person. Therefore, we find these five values consistent with our heritage and ministry:

Compassion, Respect, Excellence, Stewardship, Community

“‘Our value of Respect ties directly to our Diversity bottom line – how we treat our employees is how they will treat our customers.’”
