Tens of thousands of people rallied across the country in support of same-sex marriage over the weekend, reports The New York Times. From California to New York, the rallies constituted what the article called one of the nation's largest displays of support for LGBT rights.
"We are not going to rest at night until every citizen in every state in this country can say, 'This is the person I love,' and take their hand in marriage," said Rep. Anthony D. Weiner (D-N.Y.) to 4,000 people who joined a rally in New York City on Saturday.
"I've come here from the fires because I feel the wind at my back as well," said Los Angeles Mayor Antonio R. Villaraigosa to a group of 9,000 after traveling from the fire zone via helicopter. "It's the wind of change that has swept the nation. It is the wind of optimism and hope."
The nationwide demonstrations came 11 days after the passage of Proposition 8 outlawed same-sex marriage in California. The protests were organized mainly over the Internet, according to the Times.
