Hundreds of people from "mixed status" families gathered in Chicago over the weekend, hoping President-elect Barack Obama will make good on his promise of immigration reform, thus saving their families from being deported, reports The Washington Post. Rep. Luis V. Gutierrez (D-Ill.) called the meeting at Saint Pius Church on Saturday, telling attendees that he plans to reintroduce the immigration reform bill he co-sponsored last year after Obama takes office.
"I expect Barack Obama, our engine for change, will do everything he can to keep his promise for comprehensive immigration reform that reunites families who are already separated and keeps families together," Gutierrez said.
There are 2 million families in the United States with at least one undocumented member, according to The Washington Post. The Pulidos are among those 2 million families, and their story is one of many that is described in a report that will be sent to Obama.
Ana Pulido and her three sons are U.S. citizens, but her husband, who came to the U.S. from Guadalajara 20 years ago, has a pending deportation order. "I have two choices: divorce him or bring the whole family to Mexico," Pulido told the Post. "When you've been married to the same man for years, that's a hard choice."
