Shakira's Barefoot Initiative to Fight Hunger

Pies Descalzos means barefoot in singer Shakira's native Colombia, but it is also the name of her children's foundation, which has focused exclusively on her home country--until now. The pop star and longtime activist for Latin American's poor children plans to make Barefoot a worldwide initiative. "A kid with an empty stomach cannot learn," said Shakira in an appearance at Columbia University with singer Alejandro Sanz and the presidents of Mexico, Argentina, Paraguay, El Salvador and Panama.
At the event, the world leaders were pressed to adopt an agreement on combating child poverty during the upcoming Ibero-American Summit in late October.
