Civil-rights champion and Massachusetts Sen. Edward Kennedy made a brief return to the Senate, promising to continue to fight for the protection of health care services for senior citizens, reports 365gay.com. "I return to the Senate today to keep a promise to our senior citizens, and that's to protect Medicare," he told the crowd, who applauded the senator's return. Kennedy's appearance also gave lawmakers the needed 60 votes to advance new Medicare legislation, eliminating the 10.6 percent pay cut for doctors who treat Medicare patients, which went into effect July 1. Many doctors have threatened to stop serving Medicare patients if the cuts persist. Sen. Kennedy's wife, Vicki, and niece, Caroline, sat in the gallery and wiped away tears, as did tourists and many of the senator's colleagues.
