So far this year the federal government has deported nearly 50 percent more undocumented workers than at this point in 2007, and if deportations continue at the current pace they could reach a decade-long high, reports The Miami Herald. The number of undocumented workers deported in the first six months of 2008 is 5,889, while during the same period in 2007 3,942 were deported.
At this rate, Florida deportations could eclipse the state's decade high, which was set in 2003 when 7,695 undocumented workers were deported, reports The Miami Herald.
It is likely that the number of deportations will increase rather than decrease. In the next month, two teams of immigration agents are expected to deploy in Florida to "find and detain" undocumented workers. Currently, Immigration and Customs Enforcement has seven fugitive operations teams working in the state, according to The Herald.
