Life Expectancy for Women Has Dropped Since the 1980s, U.S. women's life expectancy has increased by less than two years. However, certain areas, such as Appalachia, the Deep South and lower Midwest have had the opposite effect. In 1983, the life expectancy in these areas was 78 years for women but has since dropped by 1.3 years.
