| Why
It's on the Top 50: CEO Commitment and Corporate Communications helped CSX
break onto the Top 50 for the first time.
Diversity Strengths:
Chairman, President and CEO Michael J. Ward personally signs off on compensation tied to diversity.
The company has mandatory diversity training for all employees, which is offered every month, lasts for one day and has metrics in place to measure its effectiveness. CSX also has both an internal and an external diversity council.
The company's commitment to diversity in a traditionally white, male industry is clear in its work force and new-hire numbers. Although its work force was only 6 percent women, 13.25 percent Black, 1 percent Latino, 0.75 percent Asian and 0.5 percent Native American, its new hires last year were 10 percent women, 25 percent Black, 2 percent Latino, 2 percent Asian and 2 percent Native American.
Susan Hamilton, Assistant Vice President, Diversity: "CSX transmits our values of dignity and respect in the following ways: mailing our Code of Ethics to every employee's home;
performance-management competencies of People Leadership; incorporating stringent coaching and inclusion standards and universal training the past four years through 'Results Through People' training conducted by leaders for their direct reports; and inclusion councils and groups at the grassroots level."
