Why It's on the Top 50: In its third year participating, WellPoint gets high marks for its Corporate and Organizational Communications.

Diversity Strengths: Diversity training is mandatory for all employees, is offered every month, lasts for more than one day and has metrics to measure its effectiveness. Employee surveys on diversity are mandatory, a requirement just 25 of the Top 50 have. WellPoint has strong employee-resource groups. An executive is a member of each group and the groups are used for marketing and recruiting purposes.

The work force is 33 percent non-white, including 18.25 percent Blacks, 7 percent Latinos and 6 percent Asians. New hires, however, are 42 percent non-white, including 24 percent Blacks, 8.75 percent Latinos and 4.75 percent Asians.

The company allocates 15 percent of its multicultural-marketing budget to media aimed at traditionally underrepresented groups.
