Why It's on the Top 50: Henry Ford Health System has the distinction of being the first hospital system to make it on to the Top 50, although several have tried. Henry Ford is particularly strong in CEO Commitment and Supplier Diversity.

Diversity Strengths: President and CEO Nancy Schlichting meets regularly with employee-resource groups and personally signs off on strategic goals linked to diversity. The board of directors is 31 percent Black and Asian, compared with a Top 50 average of 23 percent non-white and a national average of 13 percent.

Henry Ford has unbiased retention of both its work force and its management, meaning people are retained at equal levels regardless of race/ethnicity or gender. The company also has mandatory diversity training for its entire work force during employee orientation. The training is available every quarter and lasts more than a full day.

Henry Ford also allocates 26 percent of its Tier I (direct contract) procurement budget to minority-owned suppliers and 7.5 percent to women-owned suppliers. The company offers its suppliers training and financial assistance as well.

Nancy Schlichting, President and CEO: "For Henry Ford Health System, diversity defines us--we are a diverse work force serving a diverse community with diverse healthcare needs. Diversity is integral to all performance areas: our people, quality, service, academic, community and growth strategies are enhanced by a focus on diversity."

Marilyn French Hubbard, Chief Diversity Officer: "The values of dignity and respect are woven into the fabric of Henry Ford's 11 Standards of Excellence. From day one, employees are introduced to these standards, as well as to Henry Ford's mission, vision and values. All are integrated daily into the work we do and reinforced constantly through weekly employee 'huddles', monthly toolkits, and in print and online communications."
