Why It's on the Top 50: In its fourth year competing, KeyBank does particularly well in CEO Commitment and Corporate and Organizational Communications.
Diversity Strengths: Chairman, President and CEO Henry L. Meyer III is a longtime diversity champion, evidenced by his chairing of the diversity council and appointing its members, meeting regularly with employee-resource groups, signing off on diversity metrics, and his leadership position in many organizations aimed at multicultural groups, including the NAACP, the Cleveland Clinic and the Greater Cleveland Partnership. Fifteen percent of senior-executive bonuses are tied to their diversity goals, and Meyer personally determines if they have met those goals.
The bank also has an external diversity council. Both the internal and external councils meet quarterly. KeyBank has mandatory diversity training for its employees held every month and gets a perfect score for communicating its diversity commitment on its web site.
Eighty percent of its managers are mentors, compared with a Top 50 average of 35 percent. The bank has formal goals for its mentor relationships and follows up to make sure they are attained.
The company also has a strong commitment to philanthropic endeavors aimed at traditionally underrepresented groups. Those groups include the Lesbian and Gay Community Services Center, NAACP, Hispanic Business Community Development Corp., Center for the Disabled Foundation, Urban League, Human Rights Campaign, Coalition of 100 Black Women, 100 Black Men, and United Negro College Fund.
KeyBank spends almost 15 percent of its Tier I (direct contractor) procurement budget with minority- and women-owned suppliers. The bank offers its suppliers training and financial assistance.
Henry L Meyer III, Chairman and CEO: "Inclusion is a bridge between our workplace and our marketplace. It helps our business grow. Expanding the diversity of our work force expands the depth of our talent, and that increases our ability to perform. And, a collaborative working environment creates a more stable work force, which helps us work more productively."
Margot Copeland, Director, Corporate Contributions and Diversity: "We live our Key Values of teamwork, respect, accountability, integrity and leadership. We recruit and develop top talent that blends women and minorities into the management of our business. And, we work to understand and value our differences while drawing on our similarities to achieve a common goal."
