Why It's on the Top 50: A Top 50 mainstay, Xerox gets high marks for Supplier Diversity and Corporate and Organizational Communications.

Diversity Strengths: Xerox spends 32 percent of its Tier I (contractor) budget with minority- and women-owned suppliers, compared with a Top 50 average of 9 percent and a national average of 2 percent. The company offers financial assistance and training to these suppliers.

The company's leadership clearly is diverse, with Chairman and CEO Anne M. Mulcahy one of only 13 women CEOs of Fortune 500 companies. The board of directors also reflects diversity -- it is 27 percent Black and 36 percent women, compared with national averages of 8 percent Black (Executive Leadership Council) and 15 percent women (Catalyst).

Xerox also has very robust employee-resource groups, with 51 percent of employees participating. These groups are funded by Xerox, meet during the work day and have senior managers as members. The company also has senior-management roundtables with these employee groups. These groups have been in existence for more than 10 years. Xerox also has a vibrant mentoring program, in which 67 percent of managers participate, compared with a Top 50 average of 35 percent.

Chairman and CEO Anne Mulcahy: "We feel that as a diverse company we have an edge when it comes to competing for the evolving markets of the global economy. We strongly believe that a diverse work force is more creative, more dynamic, more open to new ideas and more challenging of the status quo. "

Chief Diversity Officer Philip Harlow: "We have worked hard to establish a culture that encourages employees to find common ground, focusing on our similarities and valuing our differences. We support a collaborative work environment where employees' views and needs are embraced, and individual contributions toward the success of our business are valued and appreciated."
