Why It's on the Top 50: In its first year on the list, Monsanto gets high marks for Human Capital and Corporate and Organizational Communications.

Diversity Strengths: Chairman, President and CEO Hugh Grant personally signs off on executive compensation tied to diversity, chairs the diversity council and appoints its members, meets regularly with employee-resource groups, and personally reviews and signs off on diversity metrics and progress.

The work force is 24 percent Black, Latino, Asian and Native American, but 36 percent of new hires went to people in those racial/ethnic groups, demonstrating significant progress.

Monsanto has robust employee-resource groups, which are funded by the company and meet during the workday. The company gets strong marks for its web site showcasing its dedication to diversity and for its commitment to its LGBT employees.

Monsanto offers same-sex partners of employees equal benefits, including health benefits, 401(k), bereavement leave, adoption assistance, family medical leave and relocation assistance. The company's non-discrimination policy includes gender identity.

The company donates 24 percent of its philanthropic endeavors to traditionally under-represented groups, including the United Negro College Fund and the Urban League.

This company has strong values, which it is committed to globally. Monsanto prepares its employees and their families to work in a culturally competent way in other countries and ensures its managers globally have mandatory diversity training. The company refuses to do business in countries that don't have the same human-rights values (18 percent of Top 50 companies do this) and has worked to change the laws in countries it perceives as oppressive (12 percent of Top 50 companies do this).
