| | Why It's on the Top 50: Prudential, a Top 50 mainstay, is best in CEO Commitment and Corporate and Organizational Communications.
Diversity Strengths: Chairman and CEO-elect John Strangfeld chairs the diversity council and appoints its members. He also meets regularly with employee-resource groups and signs off on executive compensation tied to diversity.
Prudential's board is very diverse--it is 25 percent non-white and 17 percent women. This compares with national averages of 13 percent non-white and 15 percent women, based on data from Catalyst, Executive Leadership Council, Hispanic Association on Corporate Responsibility and the Committee of 100.
The company has strong work/life programs--including lactation programs and alternative career tracks for parents or others with long-term family-care issues--and onsite religious accommodations, such as prayer rooms.
Prudential has excellent employee groups, which have existed for more than 10 years. They include the Employee Association of Gay Men, Lesbians, Bisexuals & Transgenders and the Able & Disabled Associates Partnering Together. These groups are allowed to meet during the work day, receive company financial supports and have senior managers as members. They are used for recruitment and community outreach.
Prudential has had deep-rooted philanthropic efforts to communities from traditionally under-represented groups. Its outreach includes the National Urban League, Aspira New Jersey and Pennsylvania, LaCasa De Don Pedro, the Children's Defense Fund and the Business Coalition for Student Achievement.
Chairman and CEO-Elect John R. Strangfeld Jr.: "Nothing is more important to Prudential's success than our employees. To attract and retain the highest quality employees, we must foster an environment that encourages, respects and rewards diversity--diversity of backgrounds, views, skills, education, beliefs and experience. Such diversity creates a culture that celebrates the courage to share ideas and unleashes creativity, a critical component of winning in the marketplace."
Vice President of Diversity Emilio Egea: "At Prudential, fostering an open and respectful culture where each employee can thrive personally and professionally is one of our core Principles of Doing Business, which we communicate to all of our employees. As evidence of our respect for each other, we value diverse viewpoints, and accept different ways of life, beliefs and backgrounds. We not only treat each other that way, but we are committed to working out that principle in each of our business relationships."
