It's on the Top 50: In its fourth year on the Top 50, Turner Broadcasting
demonstrates excellent Corporate and Organizational Communications and Human
Capital.
Diversity Strengths: Turner has unbiased retention for
its work force and its managers, meaning it retains employees at equal levels
regardless of race/ethnicity or gender. The company has strong employee-resource
groups and mandatory diversity training for all its U.S. employees, held for at
least one day every month. Turner estimates 40 percent of its philanthropy goes
to traditionally underrepresented groups, compared with a Top 50 average of 29
percent.
Turner has strong mentoring programs. Employee groups Turner
Women Today and Black Professionals @ Turner developed circle mentoring
programs. The company also identified a corporate mentoring project resource to
implement and manage all mentoring programs, including evaluating the usefulness
of existing and new resources and tools; creating and providing resources to HR
professionals, clients in each of the business units and the business
resource-group leaders; providing direction and guidance to the individuals
utilizing these resources; facilitating brainstorming, train-the-trainer and
best-practices sharing sessions; and building capability of those individuals
responsible for leading mentoring efforts.
Turner has very robust
employee groups, including one for Seasoned Professionals (older workers). The
company said several employees have organized to form a business resource group
for new hire and Millennial/Generation Y employees. This group will partner with
the Seasoned Professionals group to address the trends and business impact of a
multi-generational marketplace and organization. In addition, the company is
partnering with another team of individuals to launch a group for Turner parents
who will serve as a resource to networks and corporate functions, for example,
to Cartoon Network to address youth viewership.
The company ensures its
programming increasingly is targeted at multicultural audiences. Last year, its
"House of Payne" from producer Tyler Perry was advertising-supported cable's No.
1 sitcom of the year with Black viewers, the company said. Turner also acquired
seven networks in Latin America, doubling its holdings in the region and raising
its profile with U.S. Latinos. In addition, CNN's "Planet in Peril" documentary
scrutinized environmental racism.
Chairman and CEO Philip I. Kent: "As a global media company whose brands and businesses entertain and inform consumers around the world, diverse people, programming and perspectives are fundamental to our continued success."
Senior Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer Loretta Young Walker: "Diversity is one of the core operating principles Phil has identified to help guide business operations and measure success across Turner worldwide."
