| | Why It's on the Top 50: The hotel chain moves up 28 spots this year and has been on the Top 50 every year since 2003. Why? It gets particularly high marks in Corporate and Organizational Communications and Supplier Diversity.
Diversity Strengths: Thirty-three percent of its managers receiving promotions were Black, Asian, Latino or Native American, compared with 26 percent for the Top 50. Starwood has unbiased retention, meaning retention rates are level across race/ethnicity and gender.
The company has a strong mentoring program and first-rate work/life benefits, including onsite gym, sign-language courses, associate work/life counselors, lactation programs and floating religious holidays.
Starwood has extensive metrics to assess its diversity performance, including examination of the diversity of its consumer base, data on minority hotel ownership, the diversity of candidate slates, the diversity of participation in leadership courses, the diversity of all pipeline-development programs, data on senior-leadership engagement, and participation in its inclusion-course curriculum.
Globally, the company has ethics training and clearly and frequently communicates its values to its entire work force in more than 60 languages.
Starwood spends 13 percent of its Tier I (contractor) procurement with minority- and women-owned suppliers, compared with a Top 50 average of 9 percent.
Shelley Freeman, Director, Global Diversity & Inclusion: "At Starwood, we create better guest experiences and achieve better business performance as a result of our focus and commitment to diversity and inclusion in all aspects of our business. We are delighted to be recognized as one of The DiversityInc Top 50 Companies for Diversity in 2008, but the journey does not end here; we recognize that there is still much progress to be made. We will continue to strive to be the industry benchmark for diversity and inclusion where all are invited, embraced, valued, and respected."
