Why It's on the Top 50: Ernst & Young climbed 26 spots this year as the firm showed strong improvement in Human Capital and Corporate and Organizational Communications.

Diversity Strengths: The firm reports that 47 percent of its management promotions went to women and 32 percent went to Black, Latino, Asian and Native American employees. This compares with 45 percent for women and 26 percent for Black, Latino, Asian and Native American employees for the Top 50 average. Ernst & Young has strong employee-resource groups, with 50 percent of its employees participating, compared with a Top 50 average of 19 percent.

The firm has very strong employee groups, with more than 50 percent of employees participating, compared with a Top 50 average of 19 percent. The groups have existed for more than 10 years and have full firm support.

Appropriate to its industry, Ernst & Young uses thorough metrics to measure and assess its diversity goals. For example, its ethnicity and gender snapshots contain more than 20 different measurements, both quantitative and qualitative, including headcount, retention, promotions, partner pipeline, flexible work arrangements, participation in high-potential development programs, survey scores and client assignments. The tool provides data for each business unit and provides a basis for measuring year-over-year progress against goals.
