| | Why It's on the Top 50: The Florida health-insurance company first came onto the Top 50 in 2003, spent two years after on the 25 Noteworthy Companies list, and bounced back to the Top 50 in 2006 and 2007.
Diversity Strengths: Chairman and CEO Robert Lufrano is clearly committed to diversity, evidenced by his chairing of the diversity council and appointing its members as well as meeting regularly with employee-resource groups. Lufrano also has made sure the budget for diversity increases each year, and it was up 15 percent last year.
The health-insurance company has an extremely diverse work force that is getting more so each year. Twenty-seven percent of the work force and 32 percent of new hires were Black. And 7.25 percent of the work force and 9.25 percent of new hires were Latino, while Asian Americans were 4.25 percent of the work force and 4.75 percent of new hires.
In management, the trend is even more apparent, especially when comparing current management numbers with promotion rates. Blacks were 14.9 percent of managers but received 19 percent of management promotions. Latinos were 6.5 percent of managers but received 24 percent of management promotions. Asian Americans were 6 percent of managers but received 16 percent of promotions.
And Blue Cross Blue Shield of Florida has unbiased retention in its work force and its management ranks, meaning employees are retained at equal levels across race/ethnicity and gender.
The company also gets a perfect score for getting its diversity message out on its corporate web site.
