| | Why It's on the Top 50: Sodexo, which has been on the list since 2004, has moved up one spot each of the last three years. That's an impressive accomplishment, considering the increasing competition. Sodexo has had intense CEO commitment to diversity from former CEO and President Dick Macedonia and current CEO and President George Chavel.
Diversity Strengths: Chavel gets a perfect score for CEO Commitment, including chairing the diversity council, meeting regularly with employee-resource groups, and having a leadership or advisory position at a non-profit tied to a traditionally under-represented group.
The company ties up to 25 percent of executive compensation to diversity goals, a metric Chavel personally signs off on. Sodexo has mandatory diversity training for its entire U.S. work force and spends 35 percent of its advertising with media aimed at traditionally underrepresented groups. This compares with a 15 percent average for the Top 50.
The company's work force is very diverse. Twenty-six percent of employees were Black, 17.5 percent were Latino, and 5.25 percent were Asian. Of managers, 12.75 percent were Black, 6.5 percent were Latino and 3.5 percent were Asian. But of those who received management promotions (showing the pipeline to upper management), 13.25 percent were Black, 8 percent were Latino and 4 percent were Asian.
George Chavel, President and Chief Executive Officer: "Diversity and inclusion is seen as a differentiator and a competitive advantage in our business-growth strategy, assisting us in growing our client base and in retaining clients. Our diversity leadership has given us the opportunity to enhance the overall value we deliver to our clients by helping them address boardroom issues."
Rohini Anand, Senior Vice President and Global Chief Diversity Officer: "Dignity and respect are imbedded in Sodexo's core values of service spirit, team spirit and spirit of progress. These core values are modeled by senior management, reinforced through communications, story telling and recognition, and practiced by our over 350,000 employees globally in over 80 countries."
