| Why It's on the Top 50: IBM, participating in the Top 50 for the first time since 2004, earned a well-deserved spot in the Top 10. The corporate giant is especially strong in CEO Commitment, Corporate and Organizational Communications, and Supplier Diversity.
Diversity Strengths: Chairman of the Board, President and CEO Sam Palmisano gets major points for his deep involvement in diversity issues. IBM also has innovative work/life benefits, including LifeWorks, which assists with providing education, information and referrals on almost any work or personal issue.
The company has valuable long-time employee-resource groups and a deep commitment to LGBT employees and employees with disabilities. IBM has a very strong mentoring program, in which 77 percent of its managers participate. That contributes to its unbiased retention of managers, meaning they are retained at equal levels across race/ethnicity and gender.
Chairman of the Board, President and CEO Sam Palmisano: "Work-force diversity is a cornerstone of IBM's strategy to differentiate itself as the world's premier globally integrated enterprise. It influences how we respond to emerging trends in the 170 countries where IBM helps clients do business, and it's consistent with our company values. Diversity creates an environment that maximizes our employees' experiences and expertise on a global scale."
Ron Glover, Vice President, Diversity and Workforce Programs: "IBM's culture of diversity springs from a profound understanding of the direct connection between an inclusive work environment and our ability to attract, retain and maximize the contributions of outstanding global talent. We transmit and sustain that culture through an ongoing and visible partnership between our employees and IBM's leaders at every level of the organization, and from locally appropriate programs and initiatives that serve the needs of our huge global work force."
