The 2008 DiversityInc Top 50 Companies for Diversity: The Methodology
A total of 352 companies participated in The 2008 DiversityInc Top 50 Companies for Diversity® ranking, up 10 percent from last year and up 100 percent since 2003. Thirteen companies appeared on the list for the first time; 15 companies went up in ranking from last year.
Now in its eighth year, the Top 50 competition is an editorial process, entirely driven by metrics obtained in a detailed survey of more than 200 questions. The survey is sent to any company requesting it that has more than 1,000 U.S. employees. There is no fee to enter and no requirement to advertise.
Details on the Top 50, including in-depth profiles of the winning companies, interviews with their CEOs and their best practices, will be found in the June issue of DiversityInc magazine.
Companies that earn spots on The DiversityInc Top 50 Companies for Diversity list demonstrate consistent strength in the four areas the survey measures: CEO Commitment, Human Capital, Corporate and Organizational Communications, and Supplier Diversity. Companies are assessed within the context of their industries, geography and employee skill sets. Any company that does not offer domestic-partner health benefits is automatically excluded from the Top 50 and the 11 specialty lists.
The same survey is also used to determine those specialty lists: The Top 10 Companies for Recruitment & Retention; The Top 10 Companies for Supplier Diversity; The Top 10 Companies for African Americans; The Top 10 Companies for Latinos; The Top 10 Companies for Asian Americans; The Top 10 Companies for Executive Women; The Top 10 Companies for LGBT Employees; The Top 10 Companies for People With Disabilities; The Top 5 Companies for Global Diversity; The Top 5 Regional Utilities; and the 25 Noteworthy Companies. The global diversity and regional utilities lists are new this year.
