Asian Americans Blast TIME for Racist Headline

Some Asian Americans are furious with TIME magazine for a recent political blog posting in which Asian reporter Lisa Takeuchi Cullen mocks stereotypes on Asian accents, notes New American Media. The piece--titled "We likee Hirally! She best quality!"--attempts to explain why the Asian community has supported the Sen. Hillary Clinton using a poll conducted by the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund.

Asian Americans Not 100 Percent for Clinton

More than 2,000 Asian Americans are outraged over a recent CNN report that attributes their support for Hillary Clinton to their hesitancy to vote for a Black president. They have signed a petition to urge CNN to take the three-minute video piece "Asian Americans to Vote for Hillary Clinton Across the Nation" down, reports New American Media. A healthcare project manager with no former political experience, Samson Fu is leading the effort with the backing of S.B. Woo, the former lieutenant governor of Delaware and founder of the "80-20" initiative, an Asian-American political-action committee, reports New American Media. The video, Fu says, is "biased, more of an opinion piece than investigative reporting. CNN should be held responsible for making Asians appear racist, which is not true."

Woman Sues Golf Club Over Men-Only Event

Elaine Joyce, a champion golfer, is suing the Dennis Pines course for barring her from a "men-only" event despite her winning more than 20 club championships, including capturing the title in 2001 at an event for the state's top female club champions, and her agreeing to play from men's tees, reports The New York Times. She complained to the town's administrator and filed a complaint with the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination, which ruled in July that the club's actions were not discriminatory. On Friday, Joyce filed the lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Boston to challenge the town and the golf officials. Earlier this year, Golfweek Vice President and Senior Editor Dave Seanor was fired for the magazine's latest cover, which features a jarring image of a noose against a hazy purple sky and a cover line that reads: "CAUGHT IN A NOOSE: Tilghman slips up, and Golf Channel can't wriggle free."

No Insurance Causes Cancer Rate Spike for Black Women

Oncologists are noticing a disturbing trend: a lack of health insurance is causing a hike in breast-cancer cases among Black women. When Grady Memorial Hospital Oncologist Otis Brawley examined hospital's records, he found that, on average, about 40 percent of the breast-cancer patients treated there have already reached stage IV, for which the five-year survival rate is just 20 percent (versus nearly 100 percent for those diagnosed at stage I), reports Newsweek.

National Autism Group Slams CBS

A national autism-advocacy group is demanding an apology from CBS over a disparaging remark a contestant on the reality show "Big Brother" made about people with autism, reports The Associated Press. On the episode, 29-year-old public-relations manger and contestant Adam, who claims he works for an autism foundation, said he would spend his winning on a hair salon for people with developmental disabilities "so retards can get it together and get their hair done." John Gilmore, executive director of Autism United, said Monday that his group has been trying to speak with CBS executives since last week's broadcast, reports The Associated Press. In a statement released Monday, CBS condemned Adam's comments, saying they don't represent opinions held by the network or the program's producers.

HIV/AIDS Rates Jump in Latino Community

More than 25 years after the outbreak of HIV/AIDS, and with more than one million people infected with HIV/AIDS in the United States, a clear trend has emerged: the risk of infection is much greater for Latinos and Blacks than other ethnicities, reports New American Media. "Latinos represent an increasing proportion of all Los Angeles County HIV cases because they represent an increasing proportion of the country's population," Douglas M. Frye, director of the HIV Epidemiology Program for the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, told New American Media. Latinos represent about 15 percent of the U.S. population, but the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimate that they account for more than 17 percent of people living with HIV/AIDS and 18 percent of all new cases. Latinas and Black women make up 82 percent of women living with AIDS, according to CDC data from 2005.
