What Did Usher Say About Obama?
Sen. Barack Obama stormed the University of South Carolina on Tuesday, and his rock-star power propelled his celebrity friends to join him. A celebrity trio of Usher, Kerry Washington and Chris Tucker surprised the audience by introducing the presidential candidate to the screaming crowd. Usher, a five-time Grammy winner, and Washington, whose roles include Ray Charles' wife in the biopic "Ray," reminded the mostly Black audience that civil-rights pioneers fought for their right to vote, reports The Associated Press. There are three days until South Carolina's state primary. A recent poll, conducted by Reuters, shows Obama leading Clinton 43 percent to 25 percent heading into Saturday's contest, with John Edwards a distant third at 15 percent.
What Do Employers Want in College Grads?
Skills matter more than grades in today's multicultural work force. According to a national survey of employers with at least 25 employees and a significant history of hiring recent college graduates, only 13 percent said transcripts were very useful, compared to 33 percent who said "not useful," reports InsideHigherEd. The survey also found 7 percent of employers valued more standardized testing over intensive and personally evaluated projects. On the flipside, the survey revealed that 65 percent of employers feel recent graduates are skilled enough to succeed in entry-level positions; of that, 40 percent said recent graduates have the skills to advance. Congressman Beefs Up Anti-Retaliation Law
Rep. Albert Wynn, D-Md., on Tuesday introduced the Congressional Disclosures Protection Act of 2008, a bill intended to further protect employee whistleblowers and improve the No FEAR Act of 2002. The new bill "triples the attorney fees awarded to attorneys who receive favorable decision in court and provides more transparency and accountability in the federal government by requiring agencies to disclose the amount of money they spend defending against these claims," Wynn said in a statement. Delivering his message the day after the Martin Luther King holiday, Wynn linked his message of protection and equal rights for all to the overarching message of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. "On this day after Martin Luther King Day, I'd like to urge my colleagues to make a real commitment to ensure that all Americans are protected equally under the law. This was one of the central principles which MLK stood for and we owe it to his legacy to pay more than lip service to this ideal." Click here to read the full statement. Lessons on HIV Prevention in Online Soaps?
The L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center rolled out its new HIV prevention/education campaign, which blends the "appeal of sexy digital soaps with online forums." The "In the Moment" campaign, slated for 12 "webisodes," features five young gay men living together in an apartment complex where they all face decisions about their sex lives, targeted to reach an array of different types of gay men. "Since this campaign is available to anyone who has access to a computer, we can reach guys who don't go to bars, clubs or meetings and they can engage--anonymously if they prefer--discussing whatever is on their mind," said Alton Carswell, program coordinator for the Center's WeHoLife.org HIV-prevention program. "That was one of our goals." Despite having a positive message, securing funding has not come easily. The City of West Hollywood funded the first episode; producers hope they will be able to secure the funds for the remaining 11.
