What's the Word of the Year?

The word "subprime" topped the American Dialect Society's list of most popular words for 2007. While the word has been around for years, the society says it won because of the debilitating impact of the subprime mortgage crisis on the lives of many, particularly blacks and Latinos, reports National Public Radio.

Who Can't Texas Live Without?

The "undocumented immigrant" was named the 2007 Texan of the Year by the Dallas Morning News. "We can't seem to live with him and his family, and if we can live without him, nobody's figured out how," reports The Dallas Morning News. While the newspaper expected some backlash, it did not expect more than 800 blog entries and 150 letters to the editor, reports The Associated Press. As the number of immigrants to the United States continues to skyrocket, many states are enacting harsher penalties to curb undocumented immigration, and presidential candidates are using it as a wedge issue in their campaigns to get elected in 2008.
