Michael Savage is learning the same lesson Don Imus learned earlier this year--spreading hate costs big. Savage encouraged a group of college students on a hunger strike in support of easing immigration restrictions to "starve to death." He is also guilty of anti-Islamic rants saying that the Quran is "a book of hate," that some Muslims "need deportation," and that adherents of Islam would do well to "take your religion and shove it up your behind" because "I'm sick of you." Savage's show still boasts eight million listeners daily, which is behind only Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity in number of listeners, according to Talkers magazine, an industry publication, but he is losing millions in ad dollars, reports The New York Times. Colleges, cities and advertisers are banding together to silence Savage and are taking their money with them. On Dec. 3, Savage filed a lawsuit in United States District Court against the Council on American-Islamic Relations for taking his comments out of context and for making audio of them available on its web site, cair.com.

TGI Friday's Apologizes for Kicking Out Teen With Disability

TGI Friday's is apologizing after refusing to serve Laura Greenburg, a brain-injured teenager who can no longer walk or talk and uses a guide dog, reports the Daily Herald. The restaurant cited a no-dog policy and refused to serve Greenburg and her mother, who were celebrating the teen's 17th birthday. Other patrons left the restaurant in protest. Amy Freshwater, spokesperson for TGI Friday's, said Tuesday the manager had been replaced and the company will be re-educating management on the importance of ADA guidelines.

How Should Your State Handle Racial Profiling?

Nine years after New Jersey's shameful policy of racial profiling was revealed and the department was placed under federal supervision, police departments across the nation are trying to root out racism and New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine is asking for an end to the federal investigation. New Jersey's experience offers an important lesson for police departments across the country. The committee's conclusions, based in part on testimony gathered during 18 public hearings over the last 17 months, demonstrate that vigilance and resources can root out systemic racism in law enforcement, reports The New York Times. The committee warned that political willpower and a continued investment of resources will be necessary to make the clean-up permanent and recommended that the state's attorney general continue to monitor the agency carefully.

Social-networking sites have been all the rage for nearly a decade, grabbing the attention of everyone from advertisers to teens. Now the bug is biting researchers at leading research institutions interested in how personal tastes, habits and values affect the formation of social relationships (and how social relationships affect tastes, habits and values), reports The New York Times. While some scholars protest that Facebook is not representative of the ethnicity, educational background or income of the population at large, others have found that Latino students are significantly less likely to use Facebook and are much more likely to use MySpace.

Is National Civil Rights Museum Board 'Too White' to Do the Job?

Complaints that the National Civil Rights Museum board is "too corporate and too white" have some Memphis, Tenn., community members feeling shut out. The local disagreement festers amid myriad debates on the preservation of civil-rights figures, including the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. sculpture being built on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. "We've got corporate people on the board of this museum. But if you look at the boards of their own corporations, you will find probably few, if any, blacks. So it's a disconnect," D'Army Bailey, a circuit court judge, museum founder and ousted president, who takes issue with the board's racial dynamics, told National Public Radio.

Latino Numbers Up, But Still Few in Federal Work Force

Latinos account for 7.7 percent of the federal work force, according to the seventh annual Report to the President on Hispanic Employment in the Federal Government released by the U.S. Office of Personnel Management. Latinos represented 8.6 percent of all new hires government-wide, a 1.1 percent increase since 2006. As of June 30, 2007, the total number of Latino employees in the federal government stood at 130,224.

Anti-Gay Boy Scout Leader Arrested for Sodomy 

Eugene Evans, a retired high-school teacher and 35-year leader of the Berkeley Sea Scouts, was arrested at his home in Kensington, Calif., on Tuesday after investigators identified four youths, ages 13 to 17, who said they had been sexually abused by him, reports The New York Times. Evans had previously tried to sue the city of Berkeley for challenging a national Boy Scout ban on members who are gay or atheist.
